Cold in a brand new Greylock 3 @ 35 degrees

Just received my new Greylock 3 from JacksRBetter. Took it out for a test run and froze my buns off! When I got home, I checked the temps and the low was 37 degrees. I was using an old 30 degree sleeping bag for my top insulation. I could understand if my sleeping bag was not enough, cause it has lost most of its loft over the years, but I was surprised at how cold I was. I'll try it again with all the suspension tightened, but don't want a repeat.

    Any suggestions are welcome,
    Steven LeBlanc

Was it windy? That can really rob your heat especially if you have any gaps below your butt.

Hey Steven and welcome. I am in the same boat with you. I have recently got a new quilt and was cold this weekend even though I should have been ok with the range.

    A couple things:

Were you in the range of the quilt? I am apparently also a cold sleeper so that may have had something to do with it.

Was the quilt properly installed? The best way to make sure is have someone inspect it while you are in the hammock. That way you can check for gaps or any of the like.

I hope you get it dialed in soon!

My opinion is it is a little to small at 56 x 42. Hard to believe 800 fill goose down was cold for you though.

It doesn't take much of an air gap to let in the cold air and make you chilled. You may want to hang it fairly tight to the hammock on the body and do not over tighten the ends. Too tight will make a gap when you're in it. It should touch against your body, but not be compressed.
You can also lay in the hammock at night and have someone shine a light around the outline of the quilt. You will be able to see any gaps.

Did you add the prussicks to the adjusting line? That does wonders in keeping it against you and getting rid of any potential air gaps. I've had my 3 down to the mid teens with no problem.

Yeah, I bet you didn't have it pulled up tight enough. I had the same problem and thought I needed to get a greylock 4 to stay warm. Watched shug's vids again and kept seeing people comment on how much they have to be pulled up, enough to lift your hammock several inches when empty. They were right. Sleep toasty now into the low 20's and below.

Thank all of you. Just in a few replies and a video, I can tell that I did so much wrong on this outing. And I wanted to congratulate all of you for being one of the most awesome and friendly (and helpful) forums on the net.
