    insulation question

If I needed to insulate the bottom of my hammock without getting an under quilt would this idea work? Say I want to use my hammock in my cabin(heat gets turned off at night so I don't need too much insulation) and also with the possibility of using it outside where the temps could get down in the 40-50's. so in other words I would need varied amounts of R value. Would it be possible to just sew in a couple of yards of fabric under the hammock to where I could either stuff in a spare sleeping bag for colder nights or a spare fleece blanket in there for less chilly nights. Couldn't I just sew a "pocket" or even open ended in the general area of the hammock of where I would sleep? Your thoughts?

First thought is a double layer hammock with a sleep pad. Or just lay on the pad.
Second thought is that you could get a synthetic 40* quilt pretty reasonable that would serve all of your purposes.
I've tried hanging various things under my hammock such as a sleeping bag and it takes so much to get it dialed in that it isn't worth it.

That's why I thought of instead of hanging things it would be attached to the hammock and I could just stuff in a blanket or sleeping bag or pad according to the temp and it wouldn't move around. I guess it would be a 1/2 double layer, didn't think of it that way. I wouldn't sew it all the way to each side. I would start with say 2-3 inches from the side that way it would leave some room for a more bulky bag. but then again if i did go from the full width of the hammock it would hand any insulation pretty much where I put it.

If you could figure out the correct differential to prevent compressing the insulation you would be using you could sew another layer below it. Essentially creating a double layer hammock with a differential cut. I think you will find that the effort is not worth the reward though.

Check out Clark hammocks for how they use a similar concept of pockets.

Thick wool blanket might do the trick. Or a Walmart Blue Pad (better with side walls from another pad). Or an inexpensive 40f rated down quilt which could be also used over top quilt if need be.
