5th Annual Washington Mid Winter Hang

Well, we went over on Friday only to find the lousiest conditions ever. It looked ready to rain at any moment. It was overcast and the ground was soaked; really, really soaked. The creek had overflowed it's banks and flooded the trail at the bottom. Like 6" deep on the trail. We did some bush-wacking and went up to our past sites. There had been snow three weeks before and the trail had whole sections of ice, which made for really slick walking. One spot was occupied by a couple of ground dwellers. The creek was so flooded that we couldn't get up creek to find other spots.

The Aspens seemed to have thinned and there was hardly any ground-cover to hide us from the trail. The ground was soaked, so there weren't any places for tents. We put up two hammocks where there was about 2" of standing water. Lots of downed trees from windstorms and fresh beaver falls. By Friday night the weather had cleared out and we could see the stars. The moon was almost full and reflected beautifully off the white Aspen bark. We got a nice warm fire going and carried in a couple of large chairs to lounge in. I put up a bunch of Christmas lights. Considering that we almost bailed on arrival, it was an amazing weekend! We went up to the ridge hike on Saturday (with my buddy staying at camp, he knew the ridge was a killer from last year). I went up the hill with the teenagers. I could tell I haven't run for the last six months, as my quads hurt today like they do after running a marathon (Tylenol today!). I have to do some downloads, so I'll try to post in a bit or tomorrow.

I'm sorry I missed it but it sounds like it was a good trip to miss with all the soggy bottoms. Maybe I can make it next year. Thanks for the update and I'm glad you had a good time.
