Sometimes it is nice to just crawl in and do the Rip Van Winkle in the hammock.
A good 12 hour slumber.
We go to sleep well as hammockers.

Wow! Being bored alone in the woods has never been anything I’ve ever experienced. I’ve never had to plan out how to keep myself entertained...but, in fairness, I honestly can’t recall the last time I was bored any where....but least of all outdoors. Guess I’ve never truly hiked alone though, either...gone out without any other people along many times, but I always bring a dog...so there’s built-in entertainment (and protection) right there!
Like I said to a friend recently: the wildlife isn't going to bother you, and you're not going to do anything stupid, so what could be more safe?
Also, it helps to read the "creepy experiences in the woods" threads on reddit and various forums. No, really! Any weird human-sounding noises you hear in the dark turns out to be animals/birds.
And about all that sleeping ... it's hilarious to wake up thinking it has to be close to dawn, pull out your phone, and see that it's 12:10a.
Whatever you do, DO NOT watch or read any of the Missing 411 movies or books. And for that matter, avoid listening to Dogman Podcasts where people recall their experiences with these creatures.
Firewood, I'm always gathering firewood, the chore that never ends. But once it gets dark, I sit back and myself and my dog enjoy the fire and some spirits. Spirits are for me, not the dog
Yes.. I sleep.. A good 12 hours no problem. I'm usually tired as heck from hiking all day .. Set up camp.. Cook .. Eat.. Lay in my hammock and look over my map for tomorrow.. fall asleep..no problems for me to sleep a long time at this point.
I go out into the wilds for three reasons...
1. Local state park for an over-nighter where I set up and wander for a couple hours. The reason I am out in this situation is for loads of fresh air, tree identification, a long nights sleep and a small fire.
2. Out and back, one or two nighter. Pack as light as I can and hammer miles. I do this when I need loads of fresh air, tree identification, a long nights sleep and a small fire.
3. Backpacking trip 4-6 nighter. Pack light but with a couple comfort items, do 10 miles a day (always with a friend). I do this when I need loads of fresh air, tree identification, a long nights sleep and a small fire. A good chat is normally in order as well.
If I have cell service, I will text the wife some notes on the day.
People tend to compartmentalize themselves into IT people, and movie star people, and scientists, but when we share our perspectives about nature, we find a common denominator.

I had a fire going by 3:30pm a couple nights this past week. BORED!!! Dark a little after 5pm. Turned in one night by 7:30pm. That's messed up.
Did not personally witness the event, but was told of two hikers who routinely played backcountry golf when they got to camp. Using a tree branch as a golf club, they would swat pine cones across the terrain. Pretty wild ha!
