    New hanger - need advice

Hello all, I'm new to hanging and excited to find there is a place like Hammock Forums! I have always loved camping, but my kids, who are active in scouts, introduced me to hanging. Now I never want to go back to the ground again. I currently have an ENO doublenest, a tarp and a bug net. I'm looking around for an UQ, and I would appreciate any advice or tips anyone has to give me ---about anything related to hanging, really. Thanks so much!

Welcome to HF. Below is pretty much my stock answers to new folks starting out. Mostly enjoy the ride

My best advise for you is:

    1) Read all the sticky posts at the top of each section here at Hammock Forums. You will find all of your questions answered plus questions you have not thought of yet.

    2) Go to You Tube and watch all of Shug's videos. He will also answer all your questions but make you laugh. Leave lots of times to watch these

    3) Google The Ultimate Hang and read Derek's The Ultimate Hang pages. He does a great of explaining things you did not even know you needed to know. He also does great diagrams so it's easy to understand.

    4) Attend a Hammock Forum group hang before you invest any addition $ in your gear. There folks will show you and let you check out their gear so you can make educated decisions based on your own comfort levels

    4) Lastly NEVER take any gear to the field that you have not completely tested in controlled conditions such as your back yard in the temps/environment you expect to encounter in the field. A set up that suits one person will mostly likely not suit another so don't assume that just because I like/can be comfortable with a specific piece of gear that you will. Really. We are all very different when it comes to hammocks and what works/what does not work.

I have a Hennessy and 3 ENOs. Using the ENO Ember 2 UQ. As adverised 50* -- maybe mid 40s with better gear. I am going to buy another Ember 2 to have 2 a second complete system. If you are looking to do very cold winter camping look at other UQ. The Ember 2 is fairly rated by ENO. Easy to set up.

Welcome Enodia! Lots of choices for underquilts. First I would try to figure what is the lowest temperate that you are going to hang in and then go from there. You can always vent your top quilt.
Depend on money you want to spend and how packable it needs to be. If you want a less expensive quilt and packing size isn't that important you can use a synthetic quilt. Arrowhead Equipment has some nice synth quilts. http://www.arrowhead-equipment.com/s...torefront.html
If cost isn't a factor and you need it to pack smaller down quilts are wonderful. I have some Hammock Gear quilts http://www.hammockgear.com/
and a Loco Libre Gear quilt http://www.locolibregear.com/
Both are wonderful quilts and have great customer service.

Good luck with your shopping, It can be fun researching.

Hello and welcome. Watch HF member Shug's 10 part video series on hammock camping (and watch his other videos too for a laugh). His YouTube channel is called Shugemery. Derek Hansen's The Ultimate Hang is also an excellent resource.
