    Thumbs up Introducing!!! The over-underquilt-underblanket

    Introducing the over-underquilt-underblanket!!!

The Underblanket that goes Over your Underquilt!

The solution to every hanger's winter time dilemma. You want to try winter camping, but even if you love winter camping, you are only going to hang once a season. Going to buy another underquilt?

Your underquilt is designed to work at 40 degrees.... maybe you even have a 20 degree underquilt... but hey, no one knows, should you put the 20 over the 40 or the 40 over the 20????

    The solution!!!!

    The over-underquilt-underblanket!!!!

Made from 3lbs of wool!!! No skimp on quality here! 3 whole pounds!!!

    The details:
A $10 harbor freight wool blanket.
Wash, fold in half and sew the long edge to make a 40 x 60" blanket. Add two cords and use a few stitches in a few spots to keep the cord in place. Add $5 of shock cord and BOOM!

So, thinking about temperature... the Flame Thrower weighs a pound, and is good to 30 degrees, so this weights 3 lbs, so I figure its good to about -30deg F. Plus add your underquilt under this underblanket and I'd say its good to at least -60 degrees F.

Here is the first prototype! You can build yours for $15 and your all set!!!!

I like it! Do you think you need to add closures at the ends? Or does it stay pretty snug against the hammock?...i use a Navy issue wool blanket kinda in the same way sometimes, but i put it between the layers of my hammock.

Maybe -100 if you add reflectix. That's a lot of minus-es!

    So, all kidding aside....

I think this may work to get my Snugpak down to 5 or so degrees....

Will test it out tonight. Tonight a low of 7 deg F with 6+ inches of snow falling.

But... I do think this is a really nice solution!

If you get a breeze, it will rob your heat if you don't close the ends. CBS-cold butt syndrome is only a breeze away.

Good luck tonight. I love backyard experimenting. Another chance to hammock.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Good luck, and make sure to test it somewhere that you can retreat to warmth if it doesn't work out the way you planned. While I'm sure that it will add some warmth overall, I'm personally dubious that a couple layers of wool blanket, suspended under your hammock without a way to close off the ends and trap heat, will extend the range of your current under insulation by 20-30˚ or more (can't tell from your first post if you have current insulation rated to 40˚, 20˚, or both). But there's only one way to find out! Let us know how it goes.

I was hoping he was joking, but didn't want to come off as a jerk if he wasn't, lol!
