New custom becket hitch hardware 2.0 - The Pill!

After I posted THIS THREAD, it was mentioned that Dutch had already come up with something similar he called the speed hook. My understanding is that he recalled them after seeing amsteel strength degradation after stress testing. I was a little concerned about what other people have said about their amsteel deterioration, or even failures, when using speed hooks.

I haven't seen any bad effects in my amsteel yet with my first version, but the speed hook recall got me thinking. Increasing the bend radius is probably a good thing. Sooo, here is my 2.0 version. I think "The Pill" is a fitting name.

This prototype (final version?) is made of 1/2" diameter aluminum rod. It weighs 8 grams (compared to the titanium version's 5 grams each). Identical usage as the first version. Very easy to adjust and undo.

After stressing it with my bounce test, I undid it and inspected my amsteel. The line showed compression effects, but they were spread out evenly over the 3" or so that it wraps around the rod.

Here's a front shot of it hanging on my test fixture.

Here's a side shot with the lines coming in from opposite holes.

And one with lines coming in the holes from the same direction.

Not sure which orientation will work best, or if it even matters with how thick the rod is. Pretty happy with it though.

    Russtang,

I really love your design for better protecting the cord, and I appreciate the fact that you actually built the prototypes. I have a couple of questions....

    1. What is the weight of them?

    2. Do you plan to sell these?

    Thanks!

    Hi Rally,

    Thanks for the kind words.

    1. The prototype I made came in at 8.1g. It's a few grams heavier than my first flat version, but seems to put less stress on the amsteel.

    2. I still want to test it to failure, and see what the amsteel looks like after multiple hangs before I even think about selling anything.

It looks like a hexagonal rod? Did you ever put them into production, or did the speed hook evolve from this first design?

It was an early version of speed hooks. The hex rod makes it so much easier to start the hole.

Yeah, even with a drill press and a vice, drilling holes in round bar stock can be frustrating!

    Russ,

What size hole seems to be the best for 7/64 or maybe 1/8 Amsteel?

    Thanks.

That looks pretty usable. I like the idea of something non hook like
No matter where you go...There you are..
