Can someone point me to where the Mountainsmith poles are $13? I cn only find them for about $30/each. I don't need new trekking poles so badly that I want to pay over $60 for a pair, but I may be convinced for less.

Believe it's one of those Sierra Trading post deals that pops up from time to time, and I believe it's been on an older model.

I could tell you, but then I'd have to...well you know the story

It was at Sierra Trading Post, on sale. Sales happen quite regularly, but the best deals by far are right around the first of the year.

It's like serendipity or something. I got an email this morning with a Sierra Trading Post offer that included the Mountainsmith poles for $12.97 each. After tax and shipping, about $35. I'm amused but suspicious at the same time...

Anyway, these appear to be a slightly different version. Will they work without the ends from Warbonnet or am I going to have to spring for those?

Those will work fine. For my poles that look the same as these, the completely collapsed pole is just right for the foot. For the head end cut a 1/2" dowel 12" long and insert it in the top section. This will bottom the poles out at the correct length for the head end and the stress will be through the pole and not on the pieces that tighten up when twisted. At least the 12" dowel was the correct length for my MS poles.

The ends are not a necessity. However, if you read the previous posts you will see the reasons chose to purchase the adaptors.

Got these today. I like that you can disable the shock absorber feature. Always dislike that in hiking poles.

How much compression force is exerted by the head end of the hammock? Seems if they'll support me leaning on them then using them as spreader bars shouldn't hurt them...

I have hung several hundred nights on them without adding any dowels or other modifications. I have never paid much attention to if the shock is locked or not and have never had them budge at all. Just adjust them to length and tighten them up.

Thanks, Paul. I'll give 'em a go my next hang and see what happens. Worst case scenario, I'm out $17 and learned a lesson.
