Whoopie Slings - Is the Adjustable loop necessary?

I'm new to hammock camping and just made a couple of whoopie slings. After I got them on the hammock and strung up, a question popped into my head.

Is the adjustable loop truly necessary? Couldn't a two rope configuration with two fixed eyes and two terminated ends work? This would require far less rope (or extend the range of the sling).. which is also less weight. I ran short on amsteel when I was doing my adjustable ridge line, so I basically made a whoopie splice adjustable ridge line. So far it seems to hold.

That is very possible. It's called a UCR or Utility Constrictor Rope. Check out this thread.

In order for the bury to constrict around the amsteel there needs to be tension on both sides of the bury, like a chinese finger trap requires you to pull from both sides to constrict. The whoopie does this with the loop, and the UCR does it with a little something creating the tension like a sleeve of silicone tubing. I always thought the UCR was actually more complicated. It's a more efficient use of amsteel, though, which is probably what you are looking for.

Minimum hang distance on a UCR will be longer than a whoopie, if that's a concern for you.

Thanks for the link, that explained quite a bit. Basically it looks like doing a pruik on the tail would help keep the tension from both sides... that or a safety pin. That saves me some grief.

Safety pin wont work. I've busted them using a ucr as a ridgeline (lower stress than suspension). Make the tail long enough to tie a prussik.
