    Build-in UQ protector, idea

This is not a project but an idea I got from this thread.

If you always use a UQ protector why not sew it to the hammock?
You will be able to pack everything down in one bundle if that is your thing.
Channels in the ends with chock cord to close gaps and cut-outs for adjustments if you need to.
I just wanted to share the idea.

I was thinking about this myself.
Wondered in my head if you could dispense with the extra layer of fabric and just have a downproof strong Ripstop for the hammock and then sees in baffles and a bottom layer for the quilt.

Essentially making a uq into a hammock.

I know it means its no longer modular. But it could be way lighter.

What's the idea with the angles cut in the uqp? Just to save fabric or to hold up in place?

Save fabric/weight. If you look at a GE hammock from the inside you will see a lot of wrinkles in both ends. Wrinkles is fabric we don’t use. In this case we can’t remove them all because there has to be an decent opening for the UQ and the cuts must not obstruct the asymmetric lay.

Wouldn't it be difficult to hang an underquilt between the layers?

It sounds like you're basically making a DL hammock with enough space to fit an UQ as opposed to a pad. I have to echo Hutzelbein's question. That seems like a lot of fiddling to get an underquilt between the layers and hooked up.

I like this idea because it's versatile. It allows other types of insulation besides underquilts. One of the main virtues is that it blocks drafts. One manifestation of this UQ protector might have zippers at the openings. Keep thinking.

    I like your ideas.

The way I see it, an uqp has 2 basic jobs. One is to try to keep the wind from stealing away the warmth of your Uq. The other is to protect your uq from rain splash. If my uqp got wet from splash or blown snow, I would want to remove it from my hammock, to pack it separately.

As for your sewn on design, to make it easier for uq installation, don't sew the middle section between the adjustment openings, hem and install shock cord. It will give you a much bigger opening for access.

As I said it is not a project just an idea. I have no intention of making it at this time.
The idea was to semi attach the UQ so it could be packed as one unit (3 in 1 unit).
I doubt it would win any prices if you want to separate the UQ from the hammock every time.
I agree if the UQP got wet it would be nice to take it off for drying but I have never used a UQP and my UQ never got wet.
I do have one but it’s really just a 1oz hammock did not like with chock cords instead of whoopie slings. So far draft has been my problem. I think the Chock cord across would solve that.
In rain I rig the tarp low to the ground. I haven’t been camping in snow so experience N/A.
Another reason to sew it to the hammock if you don’t there is a chance for a show if anybody is looking I once mistook the UQ for my hammock in the dark and ended up on my a.. on the ground ( floor because it was at home) No damage or injury but …………
Chock cord on the edge could be an option but it adds weight. To many and too large openings on the edges and you risk ripping it apart if you make the same stunt as I did. Instead of the rounded cutouts for adjustment you could skip the seam in the same places.

In my part of the world we can’t do without insulation not even in the summer time but maybe you can elsewhere. Could be you can push the limit a bit because of still air trapped inside this UQP?

Please feel free to try it.
