    Durability of Cuben

I was reading on a different forum which I can't remember which one and noticed someone saying their cuben tarp was separating and essentially failing when it was in the hot, direct sunlight. Has anyone else noticed these issues or at least give me the "skinny" on the matter at hand?

Another reason why cuben fiber is not meant for car campers - it delaminates in the hot sun.

I've personally never hung my cf tarp in the daytime, and probably never will.

You must live on this forum SilvrSurfr...I think that you akwasy respond to me first and I see your posts everywhere. Well, I would certainly take care of my tarp and not leaving it hanging in direct sunlight for very long. As long as it takes quite a bit of UV abuse before it fails is fine. Generally where I'll camp here in PA (at least while backpacking) is going to be shaded. I'm still tossing around so much weather to buy the cuben or get another silnylon, either DIY or purchased. If I go cuben it is HG for sure though.

    Durability of Cuben

why would anyone want a tarp that can only be hung after dark? it seems punishingly picky and fragile to save a few ounces.

It doesn't have to be put up in the dark. It needs to be put up in the shade. Something that is shockingly plentiful in forests.

i rarely have a tarp set up and pitched unless it's cloudy with chance of rain or night time when overnight rain can be unexpected. in any case, the tarp is set up then put away in a snake skin to be quickly unraveled when needed.

Well, I read the vast majority of posts on those links (thanks for those, btw) and all it has done was confuse the situation more for me. I love the idea of the weight savings cuben offers but this durability issue scares me. Of course I would take great care of the tarp, but I don't want to have to be worried about it. I could get a a few silnylon tarps for the price of one cuben....the decisions, the decisions!!!
