I was just given a couple of these for a gift and threw them in my hammock the other night and they have an "animal" type smell. I don't have any down quilts yet so I'm wondering if all down has this smell or if it's just because the Costco throws are so cheap?
None here, but I have heard that from some people. I think the recommendation regardless if it smells or not is to give it a wash, then dry on no heat with tennis balls. Not only are you getting rid of any contaminants from the factory, you are fluffing up the down after it's been wrapped up tight for so long.

All of my down products smell the same, including the Costco quilts.

I've had other brands in the past with some peculiar game odor but my Costco throws have been pretty much odor free.

Hmm, washing it is probably a good idea. This is my first down anything so I'm still new on how to take care of it. I'm assuming I can use regular detergent?

Just curious, why no heat during drying? Is that more for the sake of the fabric or the down?

[QUOTE] I'm assuming I can use regular detergent?

Most of the cleaning advice that I've read is to use a cleaner made for down not detergent. Down contains natural oil and detergent can be too harsh. I believe the low heat drying advice is the same principle.

Two new CDT derived underquilts under test.
Both constructed using the faux baffle method to get a differential cut.

Blue is 3/4 length, 60 x 44" with 14 three inch longitudinal tubes and the original 7oz of down. Faux baffles are a nadge over 3/4" deep.

Purple is 7/8th length, 70 x 44" with six 7" tubes filled with 13.8oz down. Faux baffles on this one are just over 1".

Went out and kipped in the little blue one this morning, from 5 -7am. Temps got down to 1.1°C (34°F), ice on the car, not on the grass. Was mightily impressed by how well only 7oz of 700 fill could work. Wasn't a breath of wind tho', which helped, but I was tarpless, naked to the sheltering sky (nice to see Orion back, striding across the heavens).
Coldest it's been this autumn, down here in the mild mild west. Reckon my big purple one (no comments) should get me well below freezing.

This is the stuff you want:
Nikwax Down Wash Direct 300 ml https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XI1WT20..._OIw.xb0RHY6G5

Don't use any fabric softener either.
