    Hanging Without Trees

    Good Evening Fellow Hangers,

I got my hammock a little over two years ago and I have only slept in it once due to issues with not having trees where I normally camp (Boy Scout Camporees). It is also getting harder and harder to hang in parks from what others are telling me. So, I would like to come up with something for car camping that I can use that will not be too bulky, but still easy to set up. I need something that will fit in the troop trailer without taking up more than my share of the room, so it has to be compact. Weight is not that important as I will not be backpacking with the support system.

I have been cruising around looking for ideas. I really like the Handy Hammock, but too much money for this guy. The other system I have seen that I like is two pieces of wood bolted together near the top to make a bipod. The hammock is hung between two of these and they have a single guy line out to a stake in the ground. I think I am actually going to try this one day before my next camping trip. I would like to steer clear of the tripod versions if possible, even though they do look nice. Is there any really big problems with the bipod and guy line setup? Does anyone know of any other good setup.

By the way, I will be the only one there in a hammock.

    Thanks for the info,
    Rob

this is a setup for three hammocks but will work for one. it is great for camporees because in the daytime you can use it to meet under and convert for sleeping at night.

I have made one like it but I have tweaked it a little with the lines and connections.

Thanks dkesari. I have read the Ultimate Hang and have seen the triple setup. If other scouts or parents start using hammocks that would be the route to go. However, it takes up way too much space in the camp site for only one hanger. The Byer Of Maine stand is more what I have in mind. I just want to tweak it, like it sound like you did, and I will need to make two to hang the hammock. It should go up pretty easy with a ridge line between the bipods and then stake it out.

    Thanks for the input,
    Rob

I just got a Hammeck stand to use when camping with the Boy scouts. I had my friend buy for me so my wife would not find out. I spent too much money last year on hammock stuff.

The limitations for a bipod based system are in tension. You have to have a well holding guy system or down you go. With a tripod based system it supports you completely. If you have heavy rain or there is mushy ground already, you will have a tough time with your bipod.

I still prefer a tripod at each end supporting 16' horizontal bar that you hang the hammock off of. What if your hanging on a hillside or unlevel ground? What if your hanging off a rock bottom ground and you can't drive stakes in? What if your in sand or soft wet, mud? Tipod stand for me and quicker setting up also.

If you have a way to transport, as boy scouts for example. Yu could cut poles from 2-3 inch dia. sapling trees for the tripods saving money. Very little rope in lashing together. And your biggest expense is the horizontal pole to hang off of. Read that link for tons of ideas that work.
