    Commercial Hammock Stand questions...

    Hello folks,

Has anyone on this forum had any experience with commercial patio hammock stands?

I need a new stand. I have an old DIY stand made out of 2x4s but it's too heavy to lug around. I need something that's a bit easier to stow away in the trunk of a car.

I've looked at the Boonedox Drifter and the Hammeck stands, both of which fit the description but they're out of my price range for the time being.

So I've gone over to eBay and have found a multitude of very affordable options: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Multi-Double...item6fee45d5c4

However, there's no dimensions specs. All my hammocks are 10-footers, and there is no way for me to know if these eBay stands are going to be just right or too small for my hammocks.

If anyone owns one or has used one of these in the past, I'd really appreciate if I can get the general scoop, not only in terms of dimensions but also ease of set-up and any pros and cons.

Thank you all so very much for the help,

    R

Mecks makes and sells hammock stands.
Marty at WildernessLogics sells hammock stands.
Give them both a call and visit them online.

I have a hammock stand like the one in the top right corner of the first image of the eBay page you linked to. I use it in my room in the winter and on the back deck when the weather gets nicer. One huge difference between that stand and the ones others have given links to above is that the stand will only really work for hammocks, and short ones at that. (It's 9 ft from arm to arm, with hooks going down the outside of the arm. It's really designed for canvas hammocks.)

When you lay down in the hammock there's quite a bit of flex so you're not going to be able to rig a tarp over the top and have it stay taut. It does break down into a pretty small package that I've put in the trunk of my sedan, but it is not light by any means. (Probably par for the course with hammock stands.) I wouldn't trust to stand outdoors except in really nice weather. My back deck is covered, but even after three seasons out there I see some light rust developing. I like it for what I use it for, but YMMV.

There are many to choose from, but none are perfect, or even close to perfect. The one I've settled on for use in hotel rooms is available from Amazon. You end up very close to the ground, but at least, a decent night's sleep is possible.

I give it 3 stars, which is only impressive if compared to what I give the rest of the commercial stands, and I've seen/tried most of them.

The pipe stand that Shug linked can be made to work, can be made to any dimensions you want, and can be made in short, portable, screw-together sections, but is heavy (they all are) and spendy.

Good luck; the world awaits a better mousetrap.

Good luck with your search. I recently searched through all the different info I could find and had a hard time deciding. I just ordered a Hammeck stand 400 this morning. I had decided I was just going to weld up my own but when I added up the cost of materials and the time it would take to source the material and build (not to mention the time away from all the other projects I need to finish ) I decided to just spread the hammock money love a little more. The flat shipping rate of $5 is what tipped the scale for me. I really expected the shipping to be more.

I as sure I will end up building another one eventually....

It is nice. Especially the way it breaks down to fit in a car easily.
