North Georgia Weekend Hang - In The Teens?

I just found out I have MLK Day off on Monday so I might head out this weekend to the North Georgia mountains to try out my winter hammock set up.

It is supposed to rain on Friday so I was thinking about heading out on Sunday morning after church for a Sunday night campout.

The problem is that the overnight lows are supposed to be in the teens. That will be a real test for my 20 degree HG OQ and JRB Nest UQ.

Everyone I have spoken to thinks I am crazy for wanting to go out in the cold so if there are any other crazy people out there who want to go camping this Sunday, the 17th, let me know.

I have some awesome spots to camp in North Georgia, usually off the AT.

I took my HG 20* Phoenix out last weekend and it got down to 20* F. My feet were cold, even with a pad.

I really prefer a 10 degree cushion with temperatures. If it's going to be 30* F, I'll take the 20* Phoenix. If it's going to be 20* F, I'll take the 0* Incubator.

Mando. Definitely an invite for Sunday if interested. See if you can get off on Monday and I will kick around a few ideas. It will involve a cool camping place, adult beverages and cooked cow.

Been thinking about going to the Roan hang, but a little afraid of the icy forecast that is showing right now, not to mention the long drive, and actually looks like the weather in N.Ga this weekend will be just as cold as up at Roan the following weekend. I'm looking to get out in my winter stuff, too. Might even get try to get out Sat night as I'll have to leave early Monday - not for work but for dad duty - like late a.m. Let me firm up some things by tomorrow.

The Sunday forecast for Suches, GA is 40 high, 16 degree low with 20% chance of rain which would be SNOW!

My usual lakefront, river and waterfall camping spots are out. The wind off the water would be too much.

I am tempted to do a cliff side hammock hang on my favorite Georgia AT mountaintop but again think it might be too cold.

However, I do have a few "gap" campsites down off the mountain tops which could be interesting.

They involve a hike in from the road of at least 1 1/2 miles but will be well worth it.

I can hump in the adult beverages as needed along with the soon to be cooked cow in my Icemule cooler.

If anyone else besides Mando is interested in coming out Sunday night, please let me know.

One thing is for sure, I will have a mean fire burning.

The more the merrier regardless of the cold.

I was just on Springer a few weeks ago with a low of 25 and a vicious wind that was howling. I stayed toasty warm, but I had two others with me that were showing signs of mild hypothermia the next morning (I got 'em packed and off the mountain in a hurry). I was using my 0 degree HG full length under quilt and a 15 degree top quilt and used my little tarp to shield the wind. My friends were also in hammocks but did not have under quilts and opted to try blow up mattresses instead.
