    OH-January Hang Planing Thread

Looks like the December hang didn't work out, so let's get something together for January. Weekend dates:

    1/1 to 1/3
    1/8 to 1/10
    1/15 to 1/17
    1/22 to 1/24
    1/29 to 1/30

I'm not sure of my work schedule yet, but the 1st or second weekend I'm stuck doing warehouse inventory.

Also, let's discuss location. We've been hitting Mohican lately and that's a great place. However, maybe some other site would be a nice change?

How about Zakeski, I've never been there and would like to try it out.

Thanks to Hobopelican for starting this thread! I was hoping that someone would do it. I have a lot going on the next few weeks and I don't have any idea about my on call schedule at work for next year. I do know I'm Flying out of town Sunday Jan 10th and returning Late Friday night on the 15th. I could do a one nighter the Friday before or the Saturday after if it was close enough and am open to anything else, at least till we decide on a weekend and then work will schedule me for that same time. I'll keep checking to see how things are shaping up.

If you plan it, they will come. Hopefully?

The later end of the month works out best for me, but I could probably swing any weekend in January. As far as location, Zaleski would be great.

Zaleski would be an interesting location but it would be a longer dive than I could probably due for a short over-nighter. Last two weeks of January would be more Likely for me at that or any southern Ohio location.

Looks like some good interest in Zaleski (Me, too!). Lets start with that in mind.

If I read the thread correctly, I think we have this so far.

I have some Caltopo maps online, but for those unfamiliar with Zaleski, HERE is a brochure with map and info. It's been maybe 10 years since I was there, so if any one has been recently, maybe a quick comment on good sites, water, hazards, etc?

So far I can do any weekend in January unless something comes up before plans are actually finalized. I like Zaleski. I was just there and did the south loop in the beginning of November. The ODNR Hobopelican linked is a good map of the trail.

South loop has no real hazards. The trail can get pretty muddy and slippery in a few places but nothing too bad. I like camp D (you can only legally camp at the designated sites). I have never done the north loop so I'm not familiar with that part but would like to try it out sometime. There are water tanks that ODNR fills at each of the designated camp sites and I imagine they should have water in them. Would be a good idea to call the Forest office to find out for sure though the week of the hike. There have been problems in the past I've heard about. Zaleski is a great place to go though! I've day hiked the south loop several times and camped at site D a couple times. There are pit latrines at each camp site but personally I'd rather crap in the woods lol.

Thanks for the report, glnblnd. Sounds about like I remember. The water is a good point, they may not keep it filled in winter. Also, I seem to remember that the parking at the south loop is a bit limited, maybe 6 cars max. Is that still the case?

As I haven't been in a little while, I'm not totally for sure, but the parking at the trailhead is small, probably about 10 cars, but there is also parking across the road at Hope furnace that is a little bit bigger. I think for the time of the year, we would be fine.
