Noob tarp question, Cuben fiber is it worth it?

So I know this sounds like a noob question but I don't have a rainfly and I am looking at hammock gears cuben fiber tarps. from the few reviews I have seen people rave about them. I guess I am curious if you own one do you feel the price was worth it, what style do you have, should I get doors or not? (I mainly go to the sierras they are the closest to me) My biggest question is how durable is it? I can be a clumsy guy at times and I am afraid of ripping or tearing it. any input would be great!
    Thank you in advance!

EDIT: Thank you all for the replies it was very helpful!

If weight....or lack of in this case... is a huge concern and you are supe lightweight and like cutting ounces and grams. Then yes totally worth it.

Food for thought….. if you are like me and can "pinch more than an inch", forget about spending hundreds of dollars to save a couple of ounces on your tarp. Lose some POUNDS for free. Once you've done that, then you can revisit the issue.

That is my feeling anyway. Some may disagree. Basically you have to decide for yourself if the cost/benefit ratio is there. As an alternative, if you are a DIYer, you can make a membrane SilPoly tarp that only weighs 8oz, for under $70! Thus: https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...light=membrane

If you get a cuben tarp, you can go to Zpacks and get a piece of 1" wide by about 3' long piece of cuben with the abhesive tape on it if you ever need to do a emergency repair if that gives you piece of mind.

There's a like new one for sale on 2nd page of the for sale gear site that is a great buy.

I have a Cuben fiber Tarp with doors, however, I'm approaching 58 y/o and shedding weight from my pack is necessary for me hence the CF tarp, I wouldn't have gone CF otherwise because I still don't have disposable money and when I was younger I was still carrying the kitchen sink and doing fine (HA HA). If money isn't an issue for you I would go with CF just because lighter is better if your hiking.

If you're a hiker, cuben fiber is great. However, I always find it a bit silly when I see car campers with cuben fiber tarps.

I have the HG Winter Palace with doors, 8.6 ounces. Best tarp on the market, in my opinion.

I agree with the posts above. How much is a 10-12 Oz. drop in weight worth to you? There are alot of fine tarps for 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of Cuben Fiber. The hammock gear winter palace is comparable in size/coverage to the Warnonnet Superfly but the price difference is $255. Is 12 oz. less weight worth $255 to you? If so, Cuben fiber should make a great tarp for you.

Well, those car campers may just be hikers testing out their gear before hitting the trail. I always try out my critical gear in the front country before heading to the back country.

Good point, if I spent that much on a tarp, I'd be using it no matter where it was.
