    Best tarp for military

    Hello there,

Would love to see what you guys recommend for a tarp that is best suited for the military. I am thinking of a bigger tarp that will allow me to hang up my Hennessy Jungle Expedition, and be able to cover it with doors so that I can still have some privacy for changing without having to struggle to change clothes inside the hammock.

Order of priority when it comes to features.

    1. Doors
    2. Durability
    3. weight.

Weight would be higher, but I envision this being more stationary where I have all of my gear and not a hasty setup somewhere at night on a patrol.

    Thanks in advance!

I would get either a 10' x 12' bullfrog or a 12' old man winter from Wilderness Logics and stick with a silnylon made one over Cuben just because of durability and the beating you might give it. I am alittle biased after melting and having extreme separation of two of my cuben tarps used in 90 degree weather and direct sunlight and have never had any problems with the beating I give silnylon. Go 12' ridge line. It's only couple more ozs of weight and more coverage especially with doors closed. UGO makes a good winter tarp with doors also in 12' length. WL even offers a 13' RL. Enjoy your hangs.

I just received a new Monster from Mountain Wilderness Gear. It's 144'' long and 110'' wide. Side pull outs, doors and I added skins.. I ordered the PU4000 and it looks like it's going to be some good stuff. Very light fly and packs up small. Charlie is a good guy, very responsive and will let you design or customize to your liking. His ship times are a little long in the tooth as he is full time military so keep that in mind.
I would rather be in the woods... my dog would rather be in the pool. My wife thinks we are both nuts.

    Warbonnet Superfly:
    Doors---Check
Durability----Check, there's a thread about a member in Michigan leaving it up for 2 years continuous and it just failed due to wind and snow load.
    Weight--19 oz.

If you're hard set on camo that might be a problem as they're out of production for a few months. The brown blends in pretty well in most environments though.

Why not just go with what the military deems to be the best… get a surplus tarp.

Many of these are for covering trucks, but there is a field tarp toward the bottom. Note that it is not the lightest weight tarp by a long shot. But it is what the military thinks is the best for the troops.

I am not an ounces weenie, but those military tarps are not designed for individual carry at all. I will look into the Warbonnet and the silnylon ones because CF is definitely more expensive and I could have it very soon in the middle east and 90 degree weather will be super common and even a cold day during the summers.

Underground Quilts has a Marpat camo option on their Winter Dream Tarp. It's light weight, has doors and very well made.

You definitely don't want a cuben tarp to use in the Middle East as hot as it gets over there. .51 uber light weight cuben won't handle those elements. Silnylon or silpoly will take anything you throw at it in normal usages, but won't take high windy sand storms either overtime. That's why the military is still using the tarps they have. You want anything our cottage makers make except cuben. Just my 2 cents.

Undergroundquilts will make tarps with a fabric of your choice, I think. Ripstopbytheroll sells a robust 1.6oz Silpoly, which might be just what you're looking for (if UGQ will build a tarp with it).
