Hi all,
I've been lurking around here for a while, finally joined up last night after returning from my first hang! It was a solo trip, and lots of tips I picked up checking out the forums here came in handy and made for a great night!
I'm a long-time backpacker, but have always been a tent-guy. Just this past spring, I picked up a Tarptent Squall 2, which I gotta admit, I really love. A couple of buddies of mine are hangers, so I decided to see what all the fuss is about. My trip this weekend saw overnight lows of 25, which was a great breaking in. Luckily, I already had nice insulation from backpacking with the Exped downmat ul7 and a 10 degree Enlightened Equipment quilt, so the cooler weather was a welcome addition to the trip. Not knowing if I would really dig hammocking, I picked up a Yukon Outfitter mosquito hammock on Black Friday for $25 (what a deal!) and then splurged for a Warbonnet Superfly. Figured even if I never hammocked again, a great tarp is always good to have. All in all, I was much more comfortable than I expected to be! I don't foresee shaving any weight off my pack by taking to the trees, but the added comfort makes this incredibly attractive!
I can already feel the gear addiction kicking in. Though everything performed admirably for a maiden voyage, an underquilt rather than a pad may be in my future. Seems like lots of folks are anti-pad. I didn't mind it much, but of course, I don't know what I'm missing
Ok, rambled long enough. Just wanted to say hi from Southeast Missouri and I'm looking forward to learning and exploring this whole new way of enjoying my favorite hobby!
Hope you're all having fun out there!
