KY > Daniel Boone NF Recommendations Please

We are trying to plan a trip to Daniel Boone NF in late May and need some recommendations. We are wanting to back country camp for a couple nights. Can any of you give me trails/loops/areas we should consider for this hang?

    Thanks.

You may want to re-post this with the right format in the title KY/Daniel Boone Nat'l Forest ect.... But if you want a resource for this area of Kentucky you can start here:
    http://www.fs.usda.gov/dbnf/
I tend to stay in the Red River Gorge area in the Cumberland District, But any part of the Sheltowee Trace may be suitable for a simple out and back camping experience. You may also like Cumberland Falls state park, Cumberland Gap or Big South Fork areas as well.
    Hope this helps.

Check out the Sheltowee Trace at Cumberland Falls. A friend and I took an overnight there a couple of summers ago and spent a day at Dog Slaughter Falls. There are plenty of trails and you could even just hike the Sheltowee Trace out and back or make a loop on one of the other trails.

+1 on the Sheltowee and Red River Gorge.

    Some discussion on this HERE

How many miles a day and what conditions do you like or dislike? For example, RRG is very cool and unique area, but can be a bit rugged with a lot of ups & downs.

Miles depends on terrain to your point. We did the Knobstone Trail in Indiana and I would not have wanted more than 9/10 miles a day of that. We are going to have 2 nights/3 days of hiking. Thinking somewhere around 25-28 miles or so.

I'm planning a trip around the same time; 4 nights/5 days of hiking. Aiming for about the same mileage/day. I'm still working on the GPS tracks; I'll post some recommended routes/loops for you when they're ready in the next week or so. Any preferences for areas you'd like to see that I can work into a route for you? I'm pretty well familiar with the area, and have mapped out a lot of it with Google Earth.

The Red River Gorge is beautiful, but can be crowded. If you go, go in winter. Big South Fork is further south, but much more secluded. The Yahoo Falls loop is a good one in BSF. It is only about 15 miles +/-. Be sure to take the side hike to Princess Falls.

Check out Johnny Malloy's book "Day & Overnight Hikes - Kentucky's Sheltowee Trace". It is very descriptive and covers the Yahoo Falls Loop and the section up to Cumberland Falls. That is a great area of the Sheltowee.

I assume you're thinking about doing a one way, 3 day, section of the Sheltowee. I don't have a map in front of me. But, I think you'd be looking at a lil over 10 mi/day (15 mi?). Certainly doable. But, you may not have a lot of extra time to spend at Yahoo Fall, Yahoo Arch, Bark Camp Cascades, Dog Slaughter Falls, etc. I might suggest starting at Yamacraw and also checking out Princess Falls. You could take Trail 612 & 602 past Princess Falls, Markers Arch, Yahoo Arch and Yahoo Falls. Then pick back up the Sheltowee.
FYI - backcountry camping is not allowed within the State Park at Cumberland Falls. There is also a minor re-route of the ST in the State Park; easy enough to figure out if you have a map. We just did a few miles around Cumberland - HERE. And, backcountry camping in BSF requires a permit ($5) and can be purchased online.

Do you have a map for the Sheltowee? Pretty good maps HERE.
