My son and I stayed at Morrow Mountain State Park for an overnighter and it was very nice. You are not terribly far from Grayson Highlands SP in Virginia. You can pick up the AT from there and find many nice sights including Mt Rogers. My wife and I really like it there. There are a couple photos in my gallery of a place we set up just outside Grayson Highlands SP near the AT. They are named AT hang 1 thru 4. Welcome to NC.

When it goes over their heads, it really doesn't matter how high it is.

Another place for mtn biking is the Wilson Creek area north of Morganton. If your wanting hiking Carvers Gap to 19E on the AT is a beautiful area with a lot of open balds.

Although a bit of a drive, you're not too far from the AT in western NC. Great hiking and hanging through the Smokies, up between Davenport Gap and Hot Springs and on from Hot springs up to Erwin, TN. Plenty of access points to make long or short sections as you please. Welcome to NC!
