Welcome to NC . If you go to Barnes & Noble, look for the North Carolina section. That is where they keep all the hiking & trail guide books for NC. I was amazed at the amount of guide books for this state.

Well I might be partial but everything you could possibly want to learn about the greatest wilderness area in the world ... ahem ... can be found on Ken's site

I live in Fayetteville but I usually end up going to the mountains for my trips...from the Mountain Bridge Wilderness area up to Damascus, VA, and often to Shenandoah NP b/c I camp with friends from DC. I went thru Asheville and really want to go back b/c it looked like a great place to hike.

Always planned on going down near the coast, also...but the military takes up too much time and I'm PCSing in Dec. There was actually an article posted on backpackinglight.com about a girl's trip down on the NC coast.

I second the South Mountains State Park suggestion for the combination of mountain biking and backcountry camping.

Mountain-bike trails: South Mountains State Park is one of the few parks in the state parks system offering mountain bicyclists the chance to ride through the park. The 17-mile loop trail is strenuous, so riders should be in good shape before attempting it.

You're so close to the UWharries and South Mtn, you gotta see them! Then, from South Mtn, it is just a short drive to Linville. There is also Duke Forest and the Eno River area that are not far from you.

I've heard mtn bikers say they make special trips to NC just for the mtn bike trails... you should be able to find lots of them!

I've been to Uwharrie several times at different times of the year. Great trails! Look for a book titled "Uwharrie Lakes Region Trail Guide" (try Amazon for best price). Trails are listed with distances, type trail like hiking, horseback, bike, and elevations. On every trip I've taken to Uwharrie, I've had military guys pass me. They get out on the weekend for some down time in the woods. One of my first trips there, I remember crossing a dirt road (I'm hiking) and hearing something coming at me. Looked down the road and here comes a group of people on bicycles. Lots of trails here and with the book you can figure out which ones to bike on and which to plan to hike on.
For a day hike or an over-nighter look up Raven Rock.
