I have one of these and like it a lot. It has kept me dry in some pretty nasty weather. Good coverage and plenty of room for gear too.

If you've got a sewing machine and a can-do attitude, you could get a tarp kit from ripstopbytheroll. The SilPoly PU4000 is great tarp material. 80 bucks for a kit with doors. I'm not trying to advertise for him, but it is a good option. I am going that route myself.

DIY is a good option but in my opinion, only if you enjoy DIY
Just an out of shape middle aged guy who loves doing outdoor things with his great kids...

Valid point. I might modify it to say... you have have to be able to make it work. It is not necessary to completely enjoy the process, but it sure helps. Making it work is part of the can-do attitude.

One thing that is nice about SilPoly is that it has extremely low stretch even when wet. This eliminates the need to mate catenary cuts, which greatly simplifies the building process. It basically comes down to making a bunch of long straight seams. The end result (if using SilPoly PU4000) is a product that may be even better than the Superfly, at a much reduced cost.

I'm hijacking for a moment here, so forgive me. When doing your own tarp, do you have to cut back the ridgeline compared to the over all length of the door end - door end of the tarp? I understand that doing so makes the doors a bit longer so they close, but would having a perfect rectangle tarp work as well? Just trying to simplify making a tarp... Also, having a rectangular tarp would make using it for ground sleeping (should the need arise) that much easier.

It'll work, but not as well. Get a piece of paper and cut it to the size/shape you want at 1/2"=1'. Instead of thinking of it as cutting back the ridge line, think of it as extending the sides to get a larger door.
