New 72" Wide Hexon 1.6 Hammock

I decided to try and eliminate the last issue I had with hammocking...a small amount of shoulder squeeze. I had a rather small ripstop nylon hammock I had been using, and while very comfortable, it did seem cramped at times. I spent less than $30 on 4 yards of green HyperD (not Hexon, my mistake) 1.6 72" wide fabric. If you haven't heard, they are adding in free thread with purchases for now. I was unaware until I ordered. Nice surprise! I also got some 7/64" amsteel to make a couple whoopies and a ridge line.

I decided it needed a knotty mod instead of a foot box. I love this mod. I can still sit in it like a porch swing, but I have all the advantages of my old foot box.

Here it is compared to my UGQ Full length UQ.

Slept in it for the first time last night. The extra width and length really help. Amazing comfort! I didn't bother weighing it yet. I'm sure it would horrify most back-packers, but really, compared to the heavy-duty ripstop of my old hammock, I don't think it compares badly!

If anyone is wondering if the extra width matters, the answer is yes! Makes me wonder, though, if anyone has tried a more trapezoidal shape to eliminate a little fabric.

Nope. The whole hammock changes depending on how I lay (lie?) in it. More or less diagonal, scoot down or up a foot or two, etc. I CAN lay in it to create a ridge. I actually did that last night to put a slight bend in my knees. It is way too big for me, really. But I'm finding that has advantages.

Are you sure this is Hexon and not HyperD XL?

You're right. What was I thinking! I will fix that.

+1 on the 'trapezoidal' shape to eliminate some fabric. I'm curious to see whether or not anyone has tried it. I just made a 72" wide hammock and the difference in the gathered end is pretty drastic. It also makes the fabric flop over the face a bit. I'm curious if the shape change would allow the hammock to hold tension across the whole width or not

I'm around 5'10", and maybe medium-wide build. I hover between 165-180 lbs. (Hopefully after Christmas, closer to the 165.) Like I said, way more hammock than I need, and the ridge line is too far away for a convenient organizer to be hanging on it, but I'm working on that!

Looks great! I was asking about your height because I am 6'3" and I am debating getting the same material...

B_rizze - I would think it would be more than enough for you. I can't imagine who it wouldn't be enough for!
