Could have hung from the picnic shelters at Indian Gardens, but the other 6 nights would not have worked so had to be a ground dweller on this trip. Gives a good overview of an R2R trip if you are thinking of doing one:

Nice video Kurt, thanks for posting. Never knew there was a yurt available on North Rim. How long has it been there and how difficult was it to get permits to use it?
Rick
Great video! Brought back memories of hiking down to Phantom Ranch and staying in a cabin. The steaks there are awesome. We hiked down Kaibab and out Bright Angel. You guys make me want to go again!

Survival gear...ten White Castle hamburgers and my hammock.
Kurt you are making the pull to get back to the canyon grow stronger posting all these trips you get to do down there. I really wanted to hike up to the falls when we stayed at BA but my legs told me otherwise. Only made it a couple miles up stream from the ranch but that part of the canyon is beautiful. Seeing the yurt is very cool, please do tell us more about it and the process to reserve.....guessing you have the NR to yourselves.

It has been there about 4 years, and is available only when the facilities on the NR are shut down for winter. You reserve it just like any backcountry site. I had no problems doing so.
You should!!
Thanks Paul. I plan to take 1-2 more trips there this winter - still want to do Hermit Trail and the Escalante Route. Let me know if you are interested, always looking for hiking companions. I plan to make a 2nd (short) video on how to use and find the yurt. It is not well known that it exists, and the NR Ranger told us that people have complained that it is difficult to find. I hope to have the video out in the next few weeks.

As I mentioned in the title I was a ground-dweller on this trip, but it was also one of those "Dang, I wish I could hammock here" trips. Cottonwood campground was/is overrun by mice with no fear of humans. I used my tent with only the rainfly and footprint, so the critters could run right in. Each night we stayed there I had 4-5 mice nuzzle me around the ears, and one ran right across my face!
Both nights were spent wishing I was hanging!!
