How to correctly measure a hammock

    Hello everyone,
    Can someone please help.
When the size of a hammock is given, 10 foot 11 foot etc
Is this the measurement with the hammock out flat and only measuring the actual fabric, from end to end
Or it it measuring the ridge line. Or is it something else.?
I've searched all over the net for an answer to no avail
I would be very grateful for a correct answer.
    Thanks in advance.

It's the open, flat length of the hammock. So when we say that the RL is generally around 83% of the hammock length, that means the RL on an 11' hammock would be just a tad over 9'.

It's also why 4 yards or 12 ft of material makes an 11 ft hammock after putting in the end channels. ;-)

I always looked at it as being a hammock placed flat and measuring from where you have or would have your continuous loops, whoopies, etc. physically connected to the hammock.

I've attached photos of the way I measured it on the first tablecloth I did. More experienced hangers can correct me if I was wrong.

The only measurement that really matters, and allows comparisons of various hammocks is the finished length between suspension points. This is the working length of the hammock. Unfortunately, nobody provides this measurement, and the only way to get it is measure it yourself.

I probably don't agree with you on that, but I'm not really sure what you mean by "finished length between suspension points." An 11' hammock with a 9' RL will feel very different than a 10' hammock with a 9' RL. And two 11' hammocks with different RL lengths will feel different.

Width also matters a great deal.

Oldgringo is saying the same thing as publicalias. The length of hammock is measured from one suspension attachment point to the other and commercially available hammocks don't always provide accurate measurements. An ENO hammock may say it's 10 feet long but I have read of variations from different members of upwards of 6 inches. If you are figuring out the SRL length, you don't need to include any material that is whipped that extends past the suspension attachment points as publicalias showed in the pics.

Well, if I buy a 11' Dutch hammock, its not 11' between the suspension points. Frankly, none of the many hammocks I have were ever described to me by that measurement, but rather the length/width measure of the fabric itself. Agreed, that its a better comparison to have a finished length measurement, but that variation is insignificant in general when talking about most hammocks. Certainly, the difference between a channel with loop and a whipped end is significant, though.

All, resurrecting this to specifically ask a question on hammock length. I made a hammock that was 11' long from end channel to end channel before gathering. After I gathered the ends it measured 10' 6" laying flat on the floor. Makes sense as the sides have to curve in. Is that an 11' hammock or 10' 6" hammock?
