It had been my intension to make a tarp with doors for some time.
Suddenly 1.1 oz Silpoly - MARPAT Camo was available from Ripstop by the Roll. Happy days. Whats not to like
Materials for this build.
- 10 yd 1.1 oz Silpoly - MARPAT Camo. I have plenty for a stuff-sack but haven’t made it yet.
- 1” (25mm) Grosgrain (ridgeline)
- ¼” (6mm) Grosgrain (for the hem)
- ½” (12mm) Grosgrain (tie outs)
- ½” D-rings
- Cuben fiber for reinforcement
- Gutermann MARA 70 thread in Black and Tawny Olive.
This build is based on the “WINTER12 Tarp” drawing from Ripstop by the Roll but with minor modifications.
I made a Hex tarp in Silpoly a few months ago and decided not to make cat cuts in the next build so only straight lines in this build. I don’t think its necessary but time will show.
Beside no cat-cuts the only difference is it’s a bit shorter 142” ridge line. The reason is I saw some pictures in the gallery (by Knotty) showing the hang difference with different seizes tarps on an 11’ hammock.
The longer the tarp the lower you have to hang to avoid a conflict and it can be a problem if you want to rig the tarp close to the ground to avoid wind snow or rain.
Most of my hammocks are 11’ and the next will most likely be 11 ½‘ but I should stay dry (I hope).
During my last Tarp build I got the idea to roll the hem around some grosgrain but it was too late so this is the first.
Why?
It’s easy to make a small nice uniformed hem.
It makes the edge stronger and less floppy.
The tarp is a bit wider because less fabric is used for the hems but it is minimal.
I also hope it will have other positive effects on the tarp but time will show.
And yes, it will add a bit of extra weight but I don’t care.

I did not add Panel Pulls maybe later. Time will show.
For me the hard part is cutting the fabric because I don’t have a lot of floor space so I mark and measure in intervals.
Sometimes things don’t go according to the plan and it also happened for me this time. Kyle suggested Tawny Olive thread was the best match what’s was on stock (New BTW). No regrets here! It gives a nice contrast without compromising the camo effect on the fabric but now its up to the sewing skills. The plan was to make a flat-felled/French seam and so I did but it wasn’t as good looking as I hoped for and because the thread is a contrast color my “faults” became too visible IMO so what to do? Hide it under some grosgrain (1” folded over the ridge line). Because I did this I did not reinforce the ends of the ridge line. I doubt its necessary because the grosgrain will take all the stress.
Because the 1” grosgrain on the ridgeline is folded only ½” D-rings will fit but they are very small so I used 2 in etch end. Don’t know if they will hold but if not I still have the loop.
492 grams as it is today (no lines)
Ridgeline 142"
Width max. The fabric was approx 58" (x2)
I have taken a few pictures but sadly I won’t be able to take "real pictures" until around Christmas or after depending on the weather. Its dark when I get home from work.
