I think the easiest way to find it is to look up Channahon State Park (map link above) as that's the safest overnight parking this time of year.
3.2ish mile walk or bike ride along crushed gravel canal tow path.
The "drop off" is McKinley Woods, which is a will county forest preserve. As far as I know, you don't want to park there overnight unless you've registered to stay there.
The state park parking lot is free(ish), Steve the ranger may come by the campsite and charge the $6 per night camping fee, but nobody will bother with your car if you happen to miss him as he's easy to miss.
Sounds fun, but don't think I can make that weekend.
It's iffy, but I just found out that I might be able to make this one.
