It's a structural support beam in his house most likely. Probably on the basement level. I have one in my place as well. Although I suppose he could use it for more creative things than hanging

+1 on adding thin rubber then couple wraps with tree strap

If you use an icicle hitch, try 6 to 8 wraps as opposed to 3 or 4--and remember icicle hitch is directional, one way grips and pull in the opposite direction does not grip. Good luck on the dancing lessons.

It is indeed a structural beam. It's got 8 floors at this wings of the flat and I think this beam is going through all of them. I will take a look at the options you gave me, i think i will tey the rubber combined with straps, see if that works. Thank you! Will let you know if it works.

unless the pole is covered in grease, a simple clove hitch will hold to just about any pole, tree or anything else

Good point if it's about 4 inches in diameter there is a good chance it's a toilet waste pipe. YOU DO NOT WANT THAT BREAKING, be very careful about hanging from PIPES.... If it is a structural support. You're likely ok.

Two or three wraps of your tree straps around the pole should do the trick.
