any hangers at the sky meadows state park in virginia?

has anyone hung at the sky meadows state park in the northern part of virginia? i did a search here and didn't find anything. i was planning a one-nighter in a couple weeks, and was wondering if there are good tree selections at the primitive hike-in tent site location.

I've hiked there a few times and am interested in the answers you get, it's a nice place. Always looking for new overnight locations.

i just called their number and asked about needing a reservation, and they said yes it's required. walk-ins are permitted only if you're staying one night, but you can't register until 4pm, which is kind of crazy since it starts getting dark at 4pm and it's a mile hike to the sites. we may do a day hike this weekend to check it out and ask in-person about how early we can register for a site for a one-nighter.

Camped there earlier this year with the scouts. The website emphasises staying on the existing pads and not hanging anything on the trees. That being said several scouts were able to string up between trees over the pads. Nothing was said to them.

I stayed there last night for the first time and I really like the place. Of the 15 campsites, I was the only nutcase that wanted to be out camping when the forecast was calling for low 20F degrees. So I had the whole place to myself. Despite temps reaching down to 22F, I really enjoyed being out there and the peace and quiet of the area. The howling coyotes in the middle of the night spooked me a little, but not enough to keep me away.

Of the individual campsites, there aren't many hanging options close to the tent pads, and none that I saw allowed you to hang directly over the pad site. So I'm not sure how strict they are about having to be "on" a tent pad.

The ranger at the entrance kiosk told me the place gets very busy especially with cub/boy scouts and other groups that do one nighters on the weekends. I didn't get a chance to check out the group sites, but I think a group hang there would definitely be doable.

Thanks for the update. Some friends and I hung near Front Royal last night, we hit 19 degrees. It was pretty cold. The worse was when we had to pack up this morning, my fingers are still recovering. Nothing that breakfast at Apple House didn't fix.

Well, I guess a little West of Front Royal. We cheated and just hiked 2 miles in to camp but we brought lots of food to cook over a fire. No Mountain House this time . We were going to go to SNP near Bentonville but I guess you can't have fires and that's a deal breaker in those temps so we re-routed.
