Stacking under quilt with blue foam pad

A friend and I are about to go on a hike with a low of 23F at night. Our quilts are rated to 20F/20F and 20F/15F+overstuff so, based on rated temps we should be just fine.

However it will be our first night camping in below freezinbg temperate and we want to be cautious our first time out. So we were thinking of carrying two blue foam pads as extra insulation so that if someone gets cold they have a pad to stack with their under quilt for a little extra insulation.

So the question is, how exactly does one stack pads and quilts and is there anything we need to watch out for? I would assume you just fit the UQ as normal and then just throw a pad in the hammock and sleep on top of the pad. Is that all there is to it? Do you need to adjust the UQ differently? Thanks

You got it. Just don't put the pad between the hammock and UQ. You might also want to look into hot water bottles/nalgene. No personal experience, but there are a few threads around here on how effective they are.

are we talking full length pads?

if so, i'd think you're going to kill the effect of your down. the down needs to be next to skin to really do it's thing.

if you have a pad between the uq, then basically you're reducing your uq to a windbreaker, more or less. its not going to augment the pad as a warming device.

No, this isn't correct. Adding a pad on top of a down quilt will increase your insulation. Insulation is insulation. It all works the same way.

What to watch out for: The stiffness of the pad can change the shape of the hammock. So if you have the quilt set up for just you, adding the pad may induce some gaps which WILL reduce the effectiveness of the quilt. Basically you may need to readjust your quilt when adding a pad.

Also, the pad probably wont be wide enough to cover your shoulders, so if you're really too cold all over, you may need to improvise something for that.

I'm really new to winter hanging, so I always have more questions than answers! :-) I can't quantify it, but it seems that the winter sock I have (Dutch's) adds 5°F to 10°F of warmth to my setup. Blocking the wind is a real help for me.

Personally, I would trust the UQ more and just take a much smaller pad for your lower back/butt. I sometimes take a piece of windshield sun shade material ($1.99) cut to about 20"x24" just in case. I doubt you would need the entire pad unless you were pushing it by 20° or more. I've used my 20° +1oz overfill to 3° without any problems.

I nearly always bring a pad with me on my trips.

I use them to sit around the campfire and as a hammock welcome mat !

I have the best success supplementing my insulation by wearing layers to bed, rather than using pads; although a small foot pad in the TQ always does the trick to cure CFS (cold foot syndrome).

Personally, without prior testing, I would trust the underquilt ratings before adding a pad. To me that just opens you up to a whole new world of issues. Again, no direct experience with it here, but I would think the pad would interfere with how well the UQ seals against your hammock/back and thus negate rhe benefits of having it at all. With those temps and your stated quilts I'd have some spare clothing as insulation just in case and plan on using a hot Nalgene bottle instead of the pads. Also, pitch your tarp well to block the wind.

With proper testing and tinkering you can probably get the pads to work as well but on the trail isn't the best place to test in those weather conditions. Good luck.

Yep, this has worked well for me also. Light and easy to pack and it really seemed to help with my cold area.

Just don't use it as a stepping mat on snow!! Remember Chevy Chase in the movie Christmas Vacation? It's even worse than that!
