That hike up the backside will be a all day trip in the snow. I know they have put switch backs in the last 3 years but still a windy and longer trip now. That will be a slow go from iron mountain. Good luck! Carvers is still the way to go for me.

I hope I can make it this year, I got to see your Netless winter bonefire in person and I know it will keep you warm. I love mine he made me last year and I'm sleeping in it now.

Nah, Hughes Gap.....only approximately 5.1miles. But so far no shuttle. And the problem of an extended sweat fest so it most likely won't happen.

Poof went to Ripshin today and there is 3-4 inches of snow in the drive so that is a positive.

Def looking forward to testing (finally) Bro Bones latest.

I still plan on making this hang , unfortunately I will be leaving after work and hopefully make the parking lot by 730 pm. I am wondering if I walked the road to the top and then come down how that would be. Well marked, how far once I get to the trail, etc. It will be a slow go regardless of which way.

My plan is to get up there relatively early in the day Friday to scrounge for wood. Might even bring a small load up from home.

Something came up so I won't be able to make it this year. I have been watching the weather and looks like it will be on point. Cold with snow. Everyone have fun and be safe.

OK folks. I'd strongly suggest all who are entertaining thoughts of attending this years RHK Higher Colder look strongly/closely at the forecast for this coming weekend.
As in the past it would be prudent/wise to have extra fuel and food in your vehicle at Carvers. The DOT has always been quick about clearing the
roads but with a potential now of 3 feet of snow it might take them a bit longer to prioritize getting to the gap.
Remember no one (with one exception) has ever gotten into trouble once on the trail at this hang but getting there road-wise can be a whole nuther matter...no hang is worth
    a tragedy on the highway.
I mentioned 3 feet of snow because I was looking at the forecast for the eastern seaboard for this coming week and there is a big storm supposedly headed toward DC:

Looking at the map you can see the Roan area as a potential benefactor (if you love snow).

I was wondering about the roads. The trail doesn't hold that many obstacles, so I'm good there, but the raod could be an issue. If I can't make it up the road, I'll be rolling over to that side road to get to the Overmountain Shelter.
