You can search mountain forecast then blue ridge mountains then roan knob. it will then give you the option of 2000's or 6000's and something if I remember correctly. I assume that the 6000 plus will be at the knob where we hang at. It gives highs/lows/ wind speed and wind chills. Hopefully that helps

I want to go, will have to see. If I go, I'd love to do that hike to Overmountain.

    Thx, that's a good resource I didn't know about.

I hope to see you up there. I wish I had the time for a hike to Overmountain Shelter again, but it'll have to wait.

On temps for RHK, day or two before I get a 3 day forecast for Roan Mountain (the city), then subtract 25F from that.
Textbook says subtract 20F, I add 5 more for insurance.
So if the forecast for Roan Mountain low is 20 I plan on -5 for RHK.
It's not a place to go skimpy. In July a couple of years ago we hung there in the mid 40s and again temp was not the issue. 30k winds and horizontal rain
    was the pain.
Temps are still moderate for January. Just did a 10 day forecast...if this were Jan. 14 I'd plan on -5 to 0F for a low

Thanks guys. I've been checking Accuweather.com which has a longer forecast and is predicting 2.4" of snow in Elk Park that Saturday the 23rd. Should be fun on the knob! Its not what I would call accurate at this point, but it does give a longer view of systems likely to be coming through. I don't trust a forecast for sure until about 3 days out, and even then, I learned a while back not to trust ANY forecast for 5000' and higher.

I have a 35 degree synthetic bag and several cans of foam insulation, would that be enough for RHK?? Also, are we allowed to use the kitchen in the shelter?

Should be a wonderful reunion! Weather is looking better snow-wise
Still looks warm though, so we can expect to see 'Bones in his running shorts.
I'll bring the chemical heat packs to go with the hot water bottle Spam just in case 'Ber has a need Ha!
Normally Poof works until late that afternoon but she's off that Friday so we're scheming hiking up from the backside...I think it's 2600 feet of gain...just
to get the blood pumping-that will depend on Mtn.Harbor's shuttle schedule.
