    I've been to the Gorge before I became a hanger and got soaked by the rain and wind. It was my first ever backpacking trip. I carried a 40# plus pack up out of the Gorge. I consider that my initiation.
    I now limit myself to 30# no matter the length of my trip.

    I'm going to shoot for a Thursday arrival. Can anyone advise on any train station s near by ? I'm thinking about an Amtrak from NYC

    Seahag I think Amtrak stops in larger cities in North Carolina--better talk with Amtrak about their schedules and routes and stopping points.
    I'm almost certain you will have to rent a car to get you the rest of the way to the Gorge. That is unless you can get a ride from train station to hang.

    Charlotte may be the closest unless Amtrack goes to Asheville or Morganton.
