Loop alien clones

Ok, so my steel loop alien clones turned up the other day. I'v put one on each end of my gear hammock




Am missing something or would that be an ideal simple, lightweight hammock suspension? (changing the paracord for amsteel and using tree straps)
I'v hung in the gear hammock just as it is in the pics and it feels fine, no slippage at all


So what are we saying folks......good....no good?


Gotta give a shout out to gadget for putting me onto these loop aliens.....you can use em for almost everything











I'v got to get a whoopie sling out tomorrow and check adjustment lengths but it seems like a go'er to me.....a bit like cinch buckles but for amsteel rather than webbing

You may run into a stretch issue with the paracord. Since its for a gear hammock, try Zing It

I'm going to change the paracord (its what it came with) to amsteel when a get round to it because i do use it as a chair/lounging hammock now and again . But tbh the stretch isnt a big deal when you know its there

I'd say there is a good chance that Amsteel will slip unless you have considerable friction at the Amsteel/tree strap connection. Give it a try and let us know.

With the 'paracord around tree' setup, the tree to paracord friction provides much of the hold.

OOOO SHINY!!!! I'm all over shiny!!!! I agree that Amsteel might slip, but that's not proven yet. I could also see adding some flat spots to accommodate some strap resting spots. My brain is already turning with ideas on what to use these for. subscribed.

Thats interesting. Before i hung off of it i tried it in the workshop with various cords including 1.5mm dyneema just around a 1/2" steel hook
I was pulling at it and dangling off it then with no slip at all

I havent got any spare amsteel atm so i'll try the aboce again tomorrow with the end of a whoopie sling and see if i can make it slip

Just guessing--if it slips, throw some extra wraps on your bling!

I love loopaliens! I've been using them to hang my tarp for about a year now. I've been really impressed with how well they keep the guy line taught. Are the holes in your loopaliens large enough to accept 7/64th or 1/8th inch amsteel? (I only ask because my loopaliens are just big enough to work with 2mm Zingit. From the picture, it looks as if your loopalien is quite a bit bigger than the version I have). Would you be tying the amsteel to the loopalien or using amsteel with a fixed eye to make the attachment? I've never had good luck with amsteel and knots. Too slippery.

Someone asks Derek if they could use 1/8th inch amsteel with the loopalien. He responds:

"The largest I’ve used is 7/64″ and it was tight. What are you planning to use the LoopAlien with? That diameter Amsteel is pretty serious stuff I’ve used the titanium UFA version on a hammock suspension with 7/64, but that was just to test, and honestly isn’t a great idea because how it cuts into the line. I had to replace my suspension after I attempted it. The LoopAlien held up fine, but the turns are so abrupt that it is wearing on the line."

7/64" amsteel will fit through the smallest hole....i'v never used amsteel as general cordage so it will be interesting to see how it goes with knots. If not i'll have to learn how to splice
as for dereks findings of wear on the amsteel....i dunno, it don't seem any worse than dutch bling. Dereks were the genuine article though, mine are cheap chinese knock offs. The edges on my loop aliens are orders of magnitude better finished than the dutch TI cinch buckles i'v got here and they seem to do ok
Theres certainly no visible damage to the paracord on my gear hammock
