As a "newbie" to the forums and first timer to the Mt Rogers hang, how does the raffle work? Where does the money from the raffle go to? And can I buy only just the winning tickets prior to the hang????

The Jacks from JRB host the raffle and *very graciously and extremely generously* supply gear. Anyone is invited to bring items to add to the raffle, though!

After the raffle, the Jacks forward the proceeds to attroll to be used for HF operating costs.

Talk to NCPatrick. His luck at previous raffles is now epic...

    ....

It should be noted that JRB goes above and beyond in their support for HF, with raffle donations at both the winter hangout as well as the MAHHA hangs. We as a community should be thankful to have vendors that care and give back.

Last Thursday night (Thanksgiving), I'm guessing it was around 25 degrees at Wise Shelter and very windy. But a Gatorade bottle half full of water next to my head against the back wall of the shelter did not freeze. Had ice in it, but didn't freeze. Neither did my CamelBak on the floor with stuff piled on top of it.

However, the next day, my CamelBak line froze as I crossed Stone Mountain.

If you buy tons of tickets you do get a bit luckier -- but not always. .

taz137... hard to say about the insulation system. Depends on a number of factors.
For starters, have you tried the sleeping bag as a pea pod overnight? How tight is it? You wouldn't want it tight enough to compress it's insulation or any other insulation, like clothing.

On the ride, possibly a few from this area could car pool maybe.
Nooner asked about riding w/ me, & that would be fine, but there are a few complications to consider.
1.... I probably will have to work that Fri & not likely to get away from Winston-Salem area until around 4 or 5pm.
2.... I drive a little Toyota pickup, so I could take one passenger & our gear would have to ride in the back, covered by a tarp.
3.... My mom lives w/ me & has lots of health issues, so there could be a chance of complications there that I would need to prioritize.

I'd be glad to take two or three people. My daughter and I will be in my truck, which has four doors and can hold five people.
