    hex tarp on ground

Does anyone have a good way to pitch a hammock hex tarp on the ground if you have to go there? I've spent some time trying to come up with a good pitch and couldn't come up with anything that would keep me dry in a blowing rain storm. I have a hennessey hex tarp. Its a great tarp, but I haven't come up with a good ground pitch if I had to do that.

Flying "V"- Tie off one end of the ridgeline to a tree about eye level, maybe a little lower. Then stretch out the other end to the ground going in the direction the wind is coming from. Stake down that end of the ridgeline, then guy out the remaining corners with their lines.

The tarp you in your picture looks like a rectangular tarp.

Pitched like that a hexagonal shaped tarp leaves the higher end very exposed. I agree that flying v is probably the best thing you can do with a hex tarp on the ground but it still isnt that great if its raining and windy and the wind directionchanges.

This is where the exigency of the weather conditions probably calls for tying off a smooth pebble at the ridgeline in line with the two lower tie outs as a makeshift rear tie-point.
Then you can raise the rear end to the same height as the front, pull the rear flap under and stake the side tie-outs right to the ground.
A low crawl in, but it will keep you dry.

Maybe. The sides are only 5 or six feet long (dont remember). You can batten down the back as you noted, but the front remains open. If the wind blows hard in a rain from the sides or the front I think you'll get wet. If you use a poncho (I dont) you can cover the open end. If you pitch a certain direction with the closed end into the wind and the wind direction doesn't change I think what you described will work and it would work well for just a straight down falling rain.

Anyhow, I think the hex is a challenge to pitch on the ground for bad weather. The reason I asked the question is I am thinking of buying a custom cuben fiber tarp and I like the hex shape. I was planning to use the hennessey hex shape, more or less. I planned to get ties put where I might need them for a ground pitch.

If you have a site that is reasonably sheltered, or where wind only blows in one or two directions, you could maybe set up the tarp like a lean to with end triangles? Basically, you stake the 5-6ft long side on one side, and instead of setting it up on the normal ridge line, you set it up so that the other 5-6 ft long side is the ridge line proper, and then fold the triangle ends down to the ground to give you a shallow 3-sided tarp shelter with an open front? Of course, this would depend on which way the wind blows and which way the rain would fall, but this ought to give you plenty of space in a sort of half-whelen lean to shape...

EDIT: heres a quick sketch of what I am visualizing, complete with steps

That uses a rectangle tarp, I think the OP is talking about putting a Hennessy Hex tarp on the ground as a shelter, and trying to figure out best pitch for bad weather...
