    Hi from the High Desert!

Used to live in the mountains of NC, but now I'm in Joshua Tree. Thought I'd say hello, though I can't guarantee I'll be super active here (a lot of searching and reading rather than posting). Heck, I'm far enough in the boonies to not have Internet at home. But this forum seems to be a supreme knowledge base, so "Hello," and thanks for all the advice!

I bought a hammock, rope and tarp for a motorcycle trip a few summers ago, camping about a week. Camped twice with it last fall and quickly discovered CBS at 2am. I'll camp considerably more this fall and winter, and would like to fully switch to the hammock. Doing an overnight tomorrow around Idyllwild to test my current setup while I wait for my UQ to arrive. Also, my knowledge of ropes and knots has always been "make it so it doesn't move; untangle it when you need to." So I'm a little nervous about learning to properly set my hammock and tarp, but it's good for me to learn and practice something I'm uncomfortable with :P

    Welcome!
I drove through Joshua Tree last year. Beautiful landscape, not a lot of hanging spots and those parts though.
Lots of good advice on here for all your tarp and line needs.
Check out Dutchware Gear for lots of goodies that will help you eliminate the need for knots altogether!

    Hey darkmini,

I live in western Fresno County. There are a few more hanging spots over here but not many. I take a motorcycle trip up 395 just about every year. You can find some good hanging spots between Lone Pine and Mono if you look for them. I also go to the Mojave almost every year where a friend and I drive the Old Mojave Road. I have hung in the desert a lot. Normally I use one corner of my FJ and the other end goes to a rock formation or fence pole. I purchased a Hammeck stand this year so my desert trips will be easy now when not on the bike. I have desert camped in tents, tent cots and now hammocks. The hammock, while needing a little more imagination to set up, is the only way I will go now. Good luck. I love hanging in the cold weather in the high desert.
