How to hammock camp without trees?

I just learned that the place that my troop will be camping does not have trees. I refuse to go to ground. So I need a portable hammock stand. I looked online and they are pretty expensive 150-250. Are there any that are cheaper? Any suggestion will be of help. Thanks

These two should spark some interest.

I wonder how much weight the 1" pipe stand can hold?

My research says standard 1" galvanized steel tubing can hold about 2637lbs of compressive force at 72".

If you have some DIY skills, then look up the TurtleLady and TurtleDog stands. Two very popular designs. Also, Hammeck sells a hammock stand and Tato gear sells a hammock stand kit.

If you need to hang more than then 1 hammock, look at the Yet another Tensegrity stand from the Ultimate Hang book, or perhaps even the Geodesic dome hammock stand that one person made to hang 10 hammocks for their scout troop.

    Cheers

I have successfully hung my hammock from the uprights of a three-foot-tall fence before. In our designated camping lot, the fence made a 90-degree angle and though it was very low to the ground, it still worked. No trees doesn't necessarily mean no hammocking.

Just made this one a couple weeks ago in my back yard. Took about an hour and a half, no measuring and nothing fancy. Just cut down seven "scrub" trees, lashed them together at about the same length, set up the "tripods" tossed the ridgepole over it and hung my hammock. It's a bit heavy but if you have a roof rack, very portable....though I would not go back packing with it!

7 pieces of wood and lashing, and this stand weathered three months on my local beach.
A storm at high tide knocked it over, but its still lashed and just needs to be straightened up.
    Good luck with it!

Being a scout event, the turtlelady version is appealing. Scouts can hone there lashing skills and make a useful camp gadget at the same time. The pipe or chainlink fencing is nice but I always appreciate wood. If you have a source for bamboo that would be good. I made a stand using 1.25" curtain rods. You can get it at Home Depot/Lowes in your desired lengths. More expensive than 2x2s but easier to lash in my opinion.

The built multiple-hammock stands look great, and I appreciate the engineering of the tensegrities and the Treble Hammock Tree-O (reviewed on the Ultimate Hang) solutions. However, for the sheer simplicity, I love Kenneth Kramm's 1800's version. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=704HL2OKBJ4
As a bonus, it may be a great project for older scouts on which to practice their bushcraft.
