Thumbs up My new UQ made from Costco Down throw @ $19.99

I bought a few of the $19.99 Costco Down throws and turned one into an UQ. I used grosgrain to make a channel along each edge. The long sides are the usual 1/8" shock cord. I used paracord & cord locks to cinch up the 2 ends. We're supposed to get down to 53° tonight & I hope to try it out. This down throw looked a lot more blue under the lights at Costco, but it's more of a deep purple out in the daylight.

I also made a new hammock out of 1.9 ripstop, to replace the one in this pic. I'm 325 lbs and its single layer has lasted about 5 years but it starting to get a few tiny holes.

Looks sweet! And for $20 no less. Let me know how it works with the temps. I picked up 2 of these with UQ options in mind for my WBRR.

    Looking good there!

Nicely done! I'm surprised more people haven't been trying the down throws as UQs. How well does it seal up on the shorter ends without any shockcord or elastic?

Nice job. I'm in the process of altering one as well. I'm cutting mine down. Pics to come.
Did you use standard grosgrain by folding it over or bias tape which is pre folded?

I ran paracord through the ends and cinched them with cord locks. Seems to be holding snug.

I used grosgrain for the channels, sewing one side then folding it over to attach the other side. I didn't know about bias tape, I'll be looking into that! This is only my second time using a thread injector, and the first time by myself.

I made a TQ with another of the throws I bought. Made a footbox by folding each side into the center and sewing along the bottom. Then sewed the vertical seam up about 20".

I tried it out last night but didn't make it all night. I woke up just before 2am with an aching back & decided to go inside. The quilts worked great & I never got cold, but it was only 62° when I went inside. There was even a little breeze which helped keep the dew away. I didn't use a tarp either.

I'd say these quilts should easily go to the low 50°s, and likely into the 40°s, especially with the proper clothing. For less than $50 I now have a down Tq and UQ that should be usable for more than half the year! I'm probably going to go pick up a couple more of them.

I just picked up 2 of these from my local Costco and think I'll be following your lead. Wife won't let me use her Thread Injector so I guess I'll need to bribe her :-)

Costco has thread injectors, I saw a Brother there today. Tell her you're going to buy your own! I never thought I'd like to sew (it's not manly!), but it's pretty cool making your own custom gear!
