Advice wanted - hammock for big and tall guy

    Hey all.

I have my own hammock, and my dad now wants one because he's heard how much my pain has decreased. He has terrible back and shoulders problems, he's 6'2", about 215lbs, not fat, just stocky and muscular.

My question is that the worst thing for him would be too short or narrow, leading to shoulder compression or a bad lay, but how wide is too wide?

The Bias camper XL is 11'×72", and Dream Hammock has a fabric 72" wide. So they could make an 11'×70" hammock. Am I losing it? Is this crazy talk, or brilliant?

Other considerations: this will be a stationary, non-camping setup, so weight is a non-issue. The 2 grandkids will probably want to slug in the Hammock too, so double layer is probably required.

    Thanks! Appreciate any advice.

A Polyester Crinkle Taffeta tablecloth from Tableclothsfactory.com goes for $15 when on sale. They will easily hold 400 lbs. Just sew a channel on each end (triple stitch) and you have a hammock.

132" x 90" will allow a generous and comfortable lay, and the polyester will support the back wonderfully, as it stretches very little. Many colors are available.

I guess I should have mentioned he's not going to DIY. It's sort of a hint that he's not the one here asking these questions. I gave him some suggestions and he told me to just buy the best thing, as long as it's only $100 or so. He can't even be bothered to look online.

So thank you, but that won't work.

I went with a 12' long BIAS camper XL, an option they'll gladly do for you (or him) at no charge, and love the ginormity of the thing. It's huge and offers me (6'3", bouncing between 200 and 210 these days) a pretty stellar lay.

...maybe I could make do with a shorter, narrower hammock, but I don't want to just yet. Not after dipping my toes in the 12' long 6' wide pool.

I'm 6'4" and 215lbs. Been hanging indoors in a Dutchware 11 footer made of Hexon 2.4. Very comfy and a bargin. There is a reason Dutch gets recommended so much around here.

My hammock is Argon from Dutch, so I get it.

I've heard men discuss shoulder squeeze though, and since he already has problems, I thought wider would be better. Dutch only makes 58" hammocks per his website.

My father has cut a chunk out of his tempurpedic because his shoulders hurt so horribly - so it would help me to know of you just think Dutch is generally better/cheaper/cooler than those brands, or if you really think a narrower hammock isn't an issue. Thank you!

It would also help me to know if anyone thinks more or less stretch would be better for him.

I'm 6'5", 265 these days. Width is very important to me. Can't believe I just typed that.

Anyway, 11' X 72" or even 64"-66" will work super well. The BIAS hammock should be great. I have a Hammeck and several Simply Light Designs Hammocks that size, and they are awesome.

I'm pretty uncomfortable in a 58-60" wide hammock.
