Pros and Cons of hammock "pull-outs"?

I see lots of videos and pictures of people with "pull-outs" on their hammocks, where the sides of the hammock are pulled out to each side and staked in the ground.

I'm guessing part of it is to control the flapping sides of very wide hammocks. But not all those who do this have wide hammocks? So what's the deal? What is the purpose of doing this? Are there any disadvantage?

Best use is to pull the fabric and/or bug net on netted hammock away from your face. Also supposed to help create a type of foot box area.

The problem is that most underquilts come up higher on the sides of the hammock. Therefore, the pull outs are in the way or rendered useless. They should design a small hole in the underquilt to push the pull out line through. Just a Thought...

+1 on the bug net point. If I don't use my side tie-outs, my sleep movements can leave me in contact with the netting, exposing me to bug bites.

On my halfwit the pullout helps to keep the bugnet out of my face. I only use the one on the side where my head is.

Hmm, good suggestion. If I make an UQ, I just might work this in.

It would actually help keep the quilt up and in the right position too. Hmm.....

If you make one and revolutionize the way underquilts are made, call the hole a Frog Hole. Thanks!

I can hear Shug's video already, "push the pull-out line through the Frog Hole like this, not over the quilt, but through the Frog Hole."

The under quilts we made have cut outs for the pull out lines. They help keep the UQ in position,

Wouldn't a con be, that you lose some flexibility and limit the "sliding" of the UQ needed to vent or hunker down? The "perfect lay" shifts slightly from hang to hang based on strap heights, leg elevation and height differences. Even thought my pull outs are in one place, I have never noticed them interferring with the UQ, and actually form a nice lip the UQ to ride in and around my shoulder. But I only switched recently from pads to quilt.

UGQ has a solution that works very well.
