Half a year done. Nothing special, just a nice and easy backyard hang.

The idea is simple, spend the night outside at least once a month. You pick the day, the location, and the gear. Take a pic and share your night out. No matter where you live one night a month for a year is guaranteed to put you and your gear through a variety of conditions. It doesn't matter if you pick the nicest day of the month to string your hammock in the back yard, the state park, or a remote wilderness area as long as you sleep a night a month for a year. This isn't intended to be a super hardcore test or anything, just a fun way to encourage everyone to get out year round and figure out what works.

What do you think? If there is some interest I will even make up a patch or something for those that complete the challenge.

I blew my chance at a great hang earlier this month, when I left home without my wallet. Barely made it home. So, unless I get out this weekend, here is my low key, nothing special, suburban hang.

Never hung during the week before. Gotta say, sure put me on a great mood to go to work!

I got in a second May hang (that doesn't count toward the 12 nights) but I am going to post it anyway.

I spent last Friday at Panthertown Valley, just outside of Cashiers, NC.

I parked near the top of the valley at the Saltrock Gap Trailhead and then hiked about 3/4 mile down an old logging road to the valley floor. The path was covered in mountain laurel and Rhododendron. They should be in blooming glory over the next few weeks.

I planned on hiking a 5.3 mile loop but found I forgot my dirty water squeeze bag for my filter at the 3 mile mark. Doh! So I had to turnaround and head back out to my car as I had no access to clean water.

Luckily, I came across a group of around 10 camping out and they gave me an empty water bottle so I was back in business.

I camped down the path from a small waterfall called Granny Burrell Falls. This is but one of several waterfalls spread throughout the valley.

I had a campsite to myself that night with a nice fire rolling. I also got a visit from a bear around 10 pm. He sat right outside my headlight range so I couldn't see his body. But I certainly could see his bright red eyes staring at me. I called out to him and he ran away.

On the way out the next morning I almost stepped on this little bugger. I think it was a small Copperhead but wasn't sure. He was not very aggressive so I was able to step on by with no problem.

As an added bonus, I drove by Bridal Veil Falls on the way home. It flows off the mountain top right on the edge of the highway. You can see two motorcycles parked under the falls.

Another great night out hammock camping.

Had a last minute back yard hang but got to experience a thunderstorm. I need to think about drip lines before going to bed. I did stay dry though but hammock was damp in the morning. 9/9
Get lost in the woods and find yourself again. A vacation,to me, is working with your hands and surviving because of the fruits of your labor. In the business world I teach;in the natural world I learn.

I was able to get out a couple of times in May. 2 different trips with the Boy Scouts. Our last trip we only had 5 scouts and 2 leaders. Of the 7 on the trip 5 slept in hammocks. They all stayed dry too when it poured on us on Saturday night. image.jpg
