I have not heard that the rangers there were especially difficult. Just use tree straps of decent width to protect the bark.

many thanks, I had given up on a response and quit checking, came on to ask a different question in a new thread but i'll post it here and begin praying.

I was planning to be in the Highlands as we speak but the weather changed my mind. I am leaving next Friday morning from N.W. Fla heading that way and was wondering if anybody had advice on what highways to avoid. my buddy I am going with is the navigator but I asked him to avoid Atlanta for sure and all of the interstate possible.

    thanks.

I'm not sure how I'd go from Pensacola-ish to Roan Mtn without interstates. I'd probably take as much interstate as possible and take 85 through Atlanta just avoiding rush hour. It's probably fine midday, plus you can use the HOV if you're 2+ in the car. Looking at Google, maybe Birmingham/Knoxville would be an alternative if you really wanted to stay away from Atlanta.

There will probably be plenty of leaf peepers by this weekend once you hit the mountains.

When I went from Chattanooga to Pensacola I went the Birmingham way. Never had any issues on that route even towing an rv. From Chattanooga to Knoxville area is a pretty straight and easy run.

thank you both, we will look at those options.

10-4 on the leaf watchers. I hadn't really thought about it until recently but maybe we be crowded with them while on trail. it is all of our first time on the A.T. so we have not a clue what to expect.

    thanks again.

You shouldn't have any problem with leaf peepers on the trails. Typically the volume goes down exponentially the farther one gets from a motor vehicle, but the roads can be a different story.

packing the last of the food items either tonight or tomorrow morning and then striking out about 5 am Friday morning. hope I'm up to it.

    thanks all.
