    DIY SILpoly tarp stretch

I have noticed that my tarp is a little more "flappy" on the end edges (see picture) as of late. None of the stitches are loose. Any ideas why this may be?
It's not even a year old yet. They use to be pretty taught when pitched very similar to the photo. But now a slight breeze makes them flap.

I can't answer your question, but subscribing because I'm curious.

Does short term lack of stretch equate to long term stretch???

Also subscribing for insight; my diy silpoly tarp hasn't seen a month of use yet. Definitely don't have any answers.

I hope not! I used the Silpoly for it's supposed low stretch. It could very well be my design, though I followed the DIY Gear Supply's plan (only lengthening it to 144").

On those diagonal cuts to make the hex shape, how were they hemmed? I suspect that a rolled hem was used and that may cause some issue as fabric will stretch more on the bias (diagonal) than in the other directions. It also looks like there are no cat cuts on the tarp, so that may be a reason you get some edge flapping in a breeze.

    Cheers

What's a better hem to use on the diagonal edges? I rolled mine and it was annoying to do.

You could bind the edges with grosgrain. Not the lightest weight option, however it will guarantee that your diagonal edges won't stretch on you.

    They were rolled. Good guess.
I didn't use cat cuts because the hammock elders told me I didn't need them with the Silpoly.

    Reviving this thread.

I have used the tarp now for the past few years and it has definitely stretched. The sides are quite loose and the panels themselves never become taught. Just last week I had it out in the rain and rather than sheeting the rain off it develops puddles at the bottom edge. Can't say that is 100% the fabric or the sewing...probably more of the former. I have chalked it up as a loss and will be scanning black Friday specials for a replacement.
