That's some very good advice right there! Bigger isn't always better.

I'm happy with a tarp RL the same length as my hammock, 11' hammocks and 11' tarp for me thank you! Ideal trees are difficult enough to find where I hang without increasing the distance necessary between those trees because of the tarp.

If it works for you then that's great. Part of this, like most things, is that there is no absolute right answer. HYOH! I personally mean it. Eno's are too short for me. I know people they work for. If the tarp covers your Eno and you are happy with the compromises then great!

All of this is a series of compromises to get your personal perfect setup. My DIY tarp is a flat tarp that some people wonder why I like. It's not a winter tarp yet I can close it down with doors. The doors are a little too small though.!Fortunately I rarely use the doors function, but I like the versatility for when I need it. I can also use it as a ground tarp as needed. It also weighs less then any winter tarp (except cf ones).

It's all a compromise. When friends buy an Eno and are happy I keep my mouth shut. It works for them. If they complain that it's uncomfortable I loan them a hammock that fits them, and they learn about compromise.

Hrm... I'm not sure why I got so preachy there. Apologies if needed.

I stick to the "tarp same length as hammock" rule, so most of my tarps are at least 11 feet. My favorite tarp is my HG Winter Palace because it has doors, and I've never gotten wet from blowing precipitation (unlike the other tarps).

The colder it gets, the less likely I am to play the "I hope I stay dry" game. I guess it all depends on the conditions you camp in, and the experiences you've had. Hypothermia is no fun!

Right now bigger tarps are all the rage. Years ago small tarps were popular. Both work, both have positives and negatives. There is a lot of convential wisdom grounded mostly in what is the current school of thought. There is nothing wrong with doing things differently if it works for you and fits your style. Many are using the setup they started with because it works and they are used to it. Many try out different setups and settle in on what is the best for them. Some are always tinkering trying to find a better setup for themselves. Happy hanging. Btw, I have small, medium and large tarps depending on the trip.

Three things I've learned over the years:

    1) pack weight is influenced by paranoia
    2) no one packs the same
    3) best to figure it out for yourself (what's that phrase about opinions...)

My style of camping seems to be changing over time, by default, I tend to pack for foul weather (i.e. winter tarp w/doors) most any time of the year yet I find myself not bothering to even hang the tarp if there's no chance of rain which is surprisingly often.

I have a number of different tarps but for shape and dimensions I tend to compare them all to the Warbonnet Superfly. Actually I hardly ever carry the Superfly because I have much lighter cuben tarps but it remains my favorite overall design. I really think that Brian got the design right.

It really depends on the weather I am expecting.

Cold/rainy weather I have a Kelty 12x12 that I can make doors on over my HH or my Dutch 11'.

I have a BCUSA 10x10 which actually sees the most use. I got Grizz Beaks from 2QZQ made for it and if I am hiking it is what is in my pack with the Beaks.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they aren't out to get you...
