Roger that, thanks. I might just end up buying 6 and being "done" with it - one trip shopping, that way I don't have to go back. I despise going to Lowes, honestly.

No, be like me and make 4 trips!

While I'm here, just wanted to say the 1" EMT is smaller, but thicker and feels much stronger. But the fence rail is bigger. I wonder which is actually stronger for this application? I just noticed since I had a bunch of that lying around from another project.

It will undoubtedly require multiple trips....what project doesn't? 6 top rails would put the total project cost at around $125 I think, by the time I bought miscellaneous hardware and such.

If you're not sure what leg length and ridgepole length you want, maybe look at this post & a few comments that follow it, for a way to make them longer (and optionally adjustable). Probably 3 fence top rails and one 1" emt would do. Secure the joints with hitch pin connectors as shown.

Sounds good, thanks. I think I'll start with the 5' 3" length and then I can add the EMT "extensions" if I need additional length.

EDIT: Brackets showed up yesterday...they must have gotten them out the same day I ordered.

    My Build Plan

    Parts Schematic.pdf
After reading all 62 pages I came up with this plan. Easier transport, minimal pipe, most adjustability and what I feel is a solid build. Your thoughts??

Since I won't be transporting I wanted the fewest parts possible. It's kinds scary getting in and trusting that pipe and fittings.

FYI - anyone attaching the hammock to the L connector instead of the end of pipe (I've seen a few so far) - be sure you connect it to the OUTER L fitting. When I tested it on the inside L, I dropped to my butt after a couple seconds. The only thing keeping that from slipping is a little twist screw. Connecting to the outer L gives it more to grab onto and both of those aren't going anywhere.

Picked up some 'S' hooks and (4) top rail sections last night. Hope to get to start over the weekend. Somehow a new set of drill bits found their way into the cart as well. The plan is to use (2) rails for the legs (cut in half) and then have one full rail "plus some" to play with for the top rail. I don't suppose it matters that two of the legs will have a swaged end on them.

For clarification, the swaged sections only look to be 3".

EDIT: That stuff sure doesn't seem very sturdy, but there are some big buys on here that have been using it without issue. My 235# shouldn't be an issue.

I hope! I'm only 165 and still get in with some care. I wanted a single pole up top for less to go wrong, but needed to connect two to get the right space. Should those somehow give or break, that's a TON of force to get impaled with by pipe. Ouch.

Yeah that was my thought as well - a single piece has to be stronger even if you're using one of the couplers. Perhaps a round or two of tape on the ends before joining to increase the OD a bit would help. At this point I don't know, as I haven't messed with anything yet.

But yeah, in the event of a failure, that's going to be a lot of force. Truly would be the suck.
