BigE94, you are correct, it is easier to shorten than lengthen.

Reacher, I am 5'8'' with boots on, on a good day, in direct sunlight, with nobody standing next to me.

We have a bar at work going into the parking structure that is 6'10'' That thing is way up in the air, i can't imagine a 7' pole. Granted it would be lower due to the angle of the legs. I think you make a good point about the top bar length, I think I will leave it long, adjust everything where it is right, then mark and cut the ends. Whatever it ends up being is the right length it should be. As long as I can get a comfortable hang and run my tarp under the bar then I am going to be happy.

With 7' poles at a 50 degree peak angle, the peak height is just over 6' 1", and the leg spread is 5' 11".

With 6' poles at a 50 degree peak angle, the peak height is just over 4' 7" and the leg spread is a hair under 5' 1"

6' 6" poles at a 50 degree peak angle, the peak height is a hair under 5' and the leg spread is just shy of 5' 6"

I'm dismayed to discover how much of my high school geometry I've forgotten. Fortunately, my google-fu is up to snuff:

I just found a local fence company that sells 21' 1 3/8 top rail for $17/each which effectively cuts the price in half. I'm not sure whether the swaged part counts as part of the overall length or not right now. I'm going to go over with a tubing cutter later and get me some so I'll let you know how it goes.

My 10' sections from Lowe's came in at about 10' 6" including swage.

Slept in a hammock on the stand last night and it held my 325lbs just fine without any noticeable deflection whatsoever.

I think this is probably relevant here. I also posted this on reddit in /r/hammockcamping. I decided to build a stand using the low-pitch 3-way 1" fittings. Here's a link to some pictures and more info:

Spent all of last week hanging in one of these setups without any issue with the general setup of the frames. Only complaint was the height off of the ground and not being able to get my foot end high enough.

I cut the 10'ish top rails down to 6' for the legs and used the four left over pieces for my top rail. It all fits in the bed of my truck which I do really like. Would like one end a bit higher, but keeping the poles flat in the bed of the truck isn't a requirement, but it sure is nice.

Wasn't on my setup, but another leader ordered in a set of fittings and made his own setup real quick before camp. Well, he tried hanging his actual hammock off of one of the eyelet screws. He didn't hurt himself too much, but he is having to retap and replace one of those screws.

Now it's time to figure out if I want longer legs and if it's worth the hassle to try and paint the thing. Wife is getting her own framework, so at least I won't be wasting these legs. Have pictures somewhere I will attach later.

I've got to say thanks circusfreak for posting this. I had been trying to find a good DIY plan for a hammock stand for a couple of years now. Every time I came across what might be "the one", something dissuaded me. This one was clearly "it". If works very well, is modular, cost effective and transportable. Thanks to others who have provided additional ideas herein.

Great looking stand and I like the little deck you have for your feet.

Glad your legs won't go to waste and it's nice to have the wife on board.

Let us know how the paint works out if you go that route. I would be interested to see if there are any adhesion issues.

    Edit.

I had a quick look around and found an article regarding spray painting galvanized steel.

I would rather be in the woods... my dog would rather be in the pool. My wife thinks we are both nuts.

I saw that article before I left for camp. Don't know with it possibly getting scraped up in transport and such if it's worth the upkeep.

On the deck, we got 6 inches of rain in one night last year. Everything in the hammock was dry but that was enough rain to wet the ground under the fly. Up until that point, even with the daily rains, it was dry ground under the fly.
