Catskills 2015: Slide Mountain Parking Area to Giant Ledge Parking Area

so i did my first hammock camping trip last week. as the title states i did Slide Mountain P.A to Giant Ledge P.A in Catskill Park. i saw few other overnight hikers, and plenty of day hikers near the P.A's, Giant Ledge in particular. i spent 2 nights and one full day.

but anyway i had a great first hang. here are some pictures.

That looks like a nice hike, what was the total distance covered? I camp in the Catskills 4 or 5 times a year, but I haven't been to Giant Ledge before. Might be time for me to check out some new scenery.

Thanks for the pictures. I always use the Catskills as my first night in the woods when I head south from Maine riding on my motorcycle. I stealth camp near Hunter mountain at Notch lake so that I can enjoy a great breakfast the next morning at "Brios", Phoenicia, NY. I haven't done any hiking in the park though. Great Park, great views, thank you New York for putting aside so much Parkland.

the total distance was 12.1 mi with a 1.9 mi road hike from P.A to P.A. not much distance, but there are a few class 4 and 5 scrambles i had to raise or lower my pack up or down. my final campsite was about 1 mi and about 1500 - 2000 feet up from Woodland Valley Camp Ground, was a ledge looking over the east side of Slide Mountain Wilderness with great sunrise, and may i add that i was by my self, but within ear shot of the campground on the valley floor.

Thats a favorite area of mine in the Catskills. Hiked it both in the winter and summer. My son had his first overnight backpacking experience up at the Giant Ledge campsites when he was 2. Are there is a sanctioned shortcut you can take near the Winnisook property that saves some elevation and road hiking in case you werent aware of that for next time.

I saw that on the map but figured it was private. Good to know, thanks!

If hiking toward GL youll see a small trail with a rope across it. I has a sign that I think says 'Hikers only" or something like that but I cant remember for sure. Its not a very exciting trail, but better than loosing a few hundred feet of elavation on the road just to gain it all back.

It defiantly would have been nice, is it the that dirt road just south of the club?

I don't have the map in front of me, but it's right after lake if hiking toward GL. It's clearly marked on the official maps.

Must be different, the road is before the lake hiking towards GL.
