    LARGE under quilt question

    Hello All,
I am a Newbie to Hammock camping, Hammocks at all. I know from years of experence in Alaska, nothing beats a GOOD layer of insulation under you while you sleep. That being said, I am looking for a good UQ. Now I am not a small fella. I am 6'6" tall and 275-285 lbs. so I am going to need a LARGE under quilt. I have seen some of the UQ companies offer a long size. But I have not found one that offers a WIDE under quilt, at least not on there web site. I am sure most will make a custom UQ to any size I want. But I am new to this, I dont know what will work best. A tapered shape, a rectangular shape or maybe something else. I cant be the first large guy in a hammock. Does anyone else have any ideas on companies that tailor to larger UQ's? (forgive the pun)

Another question. How far above your shoulder should a UQ go up the side of the hammock?

Any help you folks can give me would be greatly appreciated

I always felt that over the shoulder is over the shoulder and even if it was an inch it would be fine but a wider uq will make it easier on the fiddle factor. Some people just use a torso quilt and a foot pad so if you find that your length is a bit too short just add a footpad. The one from arrowheadequipment.com is pretty good IMO.

I was in a similar position as you: 6'5" and 250. I went with a 3/4 underquilt so the length is not designed to cover everything. I also wanted to make sure what I bought would be wide enough. Disclaimer: I just got it and haven't used it, but I went with the Wilderness Logics UQ. It measures 55x44. I have fiddled with it in my garage and it fits my Blackbird xlc just fine.

My Greylock 4 from jacksrbetter is my widest UQ. It wraps me up.

I am pretty "wide load" myself and the Greylock 4 is more than enough for me. You might look into that one. Just my two cents worth.

I ordered a custom extra-wide underquilt from HammockGear.com. Only cost $20 to add an extra chamber running the length of the quilt for extra width (might be a little more if we're talking about a 0º quilt for Alaska as mine was only 30º).

I also got it extra wide so it would fit perfectly with my extra wide hammock made of HyperD XL fabric (70-72" wide instead of the normal 58-60").

I love this because the quilt rarely falls off my shoulder anymore, when my last 3 quilts or so ALWAYS did MULTIPLE times during the night (even with me using quilt clips, triangles, and rigging up other solutions to keep it on me - I toss and turn a lot during the night I guess).

Just about any of the cottage vendors will modify there existing gear to your specs. Just have to tell them what you want.

While I am 4" shorter, we weigh the same so I am thinking just about any Full length ( or maybe a 7/8 length from UGQ's ) should work for you. I have a FL 0 degree UQ that I rarely use due to its bulk.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

I'm 6'5", 250, these days. I have many, varied, and unusual UQ's, and width hasn't really been a problem. Once in a while, they fall off my shoulder, but they _ALL_ occasionally do, no matter the width.

I'd go with the UGQ, which was the widest I found, at, I think, 47". I love, love, love my Zep.
